i know this isn't even important, but i got to watch a birth in person for the first time!

i came up this morning, and found fry! then, after feeding breakfast, i noticed that the female passed an egg, and nervous about others eating fry, i put her in the net breeder. i know about interrupting births, etc, but i figured it was the tail end of her birth anyways, so i gently, w/o chasing her, put her in the net breeder.

i got to see one birth! well, technically she passed 3 eggs that i saw, but i only saw one fry. i found 5 others in the tank, and i suspect the others became a late night snack. everyone is doing great. i have the three 3-week olds in a different net breeder now.

a couple of the fry still have a bit of yolk sac still on their tummies, but it seems to be shrinking. i think these are the last fry that i'm going to put in net breeders, because now i have one batch from each female (one of which is dead now), and i don't want a thousand fry.

Hey! Watching a birth is indeed important, (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Thu Jun 19, 2008 at 12:53:12 PM PST

especially the first time it happens! We learn to appreciate what is happening up front and personal! Experience may indeed be the best teacher. :)

That the female was passing eggs is not good. It may mean that the egg sack or womb has hemorrhaged. Than can happen when a very pregnant Poeciliid is moved too close to when she drops. I had a female molly who survived such an experience, but she never, ever again dropped fry. I certainly hope that your guppy isn't badly that hurt. You may want to watch and see if she does again drop fry. :(

I want to apologize for not getting back to Guppylog sooner. We have been helping a bit with a family member (my Wife's Mom) who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. And to make matters worse, she suffered a heart attack a couple of evenings ago. A big part of five of the last six days we've been away. Things like that awful disease, the loss of one's memory and so much of one's personality, the more imminent probability of a person's death and what happens in the rest of eternity rather put things like one's passion for keeping little fish into perspective.

i'm very sorry to hear that, unc. i'd tell you to send them my best but sitting down to the dinner table and saying, "By the way, dear, some teen on the internet says she's awful sorry to hear about your mother's health problems and hopes all goes well." might lead to a few strange looks. either way, as is your mantra: all the best.

so if you don't read this for a few weeks of course we understand, but the other night, i found a mystery fry in the tank. i can't tell if s/he is 1 month old and undersized due to lack of food in the big tank, or if s/he's a week old and actually ever so slightly larger than it's siblings. the 1-month-olds are yellowish while the 1-week-olds are currently fairly clear with some black on their fins, while mystery fry has a black anal fin and a tinge of yellow on his tail. only time will tell, i suppose. he's in with the 1-week-olds though, because the 3-week-olds would give him quite a time.

she wasn't moved (besides when she was moved into the net, after she started passing eggs) except for 2 weeks prior. she is currently absolutely fine, but we will see how everything goes in 3 weeks when she drops again. or is scheduled to.

but really, if you don't think she would find it weird, tell your mother-in-law i say gesundheit! which actually means "good health" rather than "bless you". although either would be appropriate.

Gesundheit!! is of course so appropriate! (none / 0) (#3)

Indeed we noticed she had a cough over the weekend. She has one often enough that we didn't think about fluid settling in the lungs. And since she is from a German-Polish family (among others - like so many Americans) that's from one of the right languages. :)

Also thought of Patch Adams and the Gesundheit Institute. There is a lot to laughter, smiling and healing too. :)

Thanks for your kind thoughts and all the best!
