Hey Charlton! How are things in Tanzania? (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Mon Sep 24, 2007 at 04:42:33 PM PST

Still recall that great shot of a swordtail you shared here.

Your success with the goldfish impresses upon me how adaptable they are. Originally temperate color sports of one of the Asian carp species, they were kept in large ornamental, painted bowls on floors - which had to be pretty cold in the winters - and in ponds. Yet yours have done very well in a warmer climate.

I recall you had a pretty good sized tank. I imagine that it will do for a discus. I also recall you championing a little pre-purchase research into the needs of fish and the eventual sizes and ages that fish will attain.

I'll bet you will have no trouble keeping the tank at 27.5-29 C. I don't know about the availability of discus books via your libraries. I might Google good discuss books, if you haven't already and take that list to the library. As with so many other facets of the aquarium hobby, there are probably a variety of info sources about discus on-line ranging from so-so to excellent.

I encouraged a real go-getter who became quite a discus breeder some years ago. His success owed very little to me. It was fun hanging out at his place and bouncing ideas off of other guests and I probably learned a lot more from them than they did from me.

Discus people are often as into water chemistry as  aquatic gardeners and, because of the discus' need for very clean water, probably on pretty much on a par technologically with marine aquarists.

Certainly I get away with thing with the killies and livebearers (though really fancy guppies can be more demanding) which one wouldn't want to try with discus. Joe dropped by here once, to visit my low-tech fish room. LOL! He face went ashen!

That discus could run up the life expectancy of a dog. Your aquarium livestock purchases may be taken care of for a decade or so. :)

I'm glad that you got in here Charlton. It is probably obvious that the software has gotten pretty buggy. Scott L. is working on that.

You may have noticed that as the software seems to be entering double posts of your diary to the (obsolete) log queue. I think I've deleted it a couple of times today.

It is possible, with a little perseverance to sometimes do a pretty successful search of Guppylog with Google. But you've probably noticed stuff missing. Here's hoping that Scott can revise, replace or remedy what is wrong! :)

Hope that discus becomes a part of the family! They are schooling, social fish. Guess you have a role to play. ;)

All the best!

hey uncscott..
wow dont beleive u remember the goldfish... anyways...now i sold 2 goldies and 2 are left... i still have that shark and the blue gourami.(three spot).. actually i wasnt too surprised to see how long these goldfish here... u just need to start them off with a bit of care then they dont mind the tank much actually... well im reconsidering the discus... cause im thinking 2 aquariums is quite a job... but ill try and convince my mum...
it was a pity that that sword tail died... now im planning to totally redesign my tank... or maybe get a better bigger new one... im not sure..... last month my pump (yes i still have the whisper 500) had gotten broken... i fixed it myself :D i opened it and immediately seen teh problem... there was a hole in this piece of rubber.. i just added some glue.. let it dry.... and voila!! it worked... the goldfish ( still those 6) went through 3 weeks without oxygen( i was surprised myself plus theres no plant in there...) :o.... iwas actually supposed to take it to a mechanic... but my parents had no time so i decided to try n fix it myself... anyways.. i was scared that the fumes of the glue (i used a very strong glue) wud affect the water..so i took it to the mechanic and he changed it... if scott is having problems... maybe he can switch to phpbb.. and have a forum... but i still like the site....:D Tanzania is good now... well alot of people are cutting down on the fish business.. i dont know why... and now goldfish are getting very rare in these parts... and i was getting a very good price for this pair... so i sold em... anyways.. nothing much to say....you said "I also recall you championing a little pre-purchase research into the needs of fish and the eventual sizes and ages that fish will attain." what did u mean by that??? didnt understand it...
anyways. how long were you a mod for??? good to see that.... is angelhologram still around???i remember he answered my first question :P i think....for the discus... i dont really need to do much research... as my cousin is an expert... he keeps 5 or 4 discus and for long they have been healthy... he wants to give me his dwarf gouramies cause he says he only wants to keep discus....
anyways now im leaving... but ill be sure to stay active around here :D tc

Your championing a little pre-purchase reserach (none / 0) (#3)
by unclescott on Thu Sep 27, 2007 at 08:44:10 AM PST

was when you urged another guppylog member to check out a fish's needs before buying it. And yes angelhologram did drop by recently. She mentioned how busy she had become, but that isn't anything new. ;)

It is neat to hear from "alums" now and then. :)

That is very resourceful of you, gluing the tear in that rubber thing. Those are called diaphragms. Sometimes new ones are available in repair kits. There is one in one of the drawers under this keyboard. I don't know how available those kits are anywhere anymore or if they have ever been offered for sale "out there."

That is a good question about the safety of the glues. Those epoxy super glues should not be breathed while they are drying. But I think they were actually developed to aid in surgery!

That glue is also useful in sealing a pin hole leak in an aquarium joint. The trick is drying the tank and still being able to find the leak! I imagine that after gluing the leak, one would have to wait no more than a few minutes or a half an hour before re-filling the tank. That compares very favorably with the 7 days one should cure silicone aquarium cement in dry conditions, though the air should be hot and humid.

Another surgical invention which is of great use to aquarists are the "breather bags" sold by Kordon Corporation. One is actually supposed to fill those fish bags up 100% with water. Properly prepared fish can last in them for two weeks.

One bag can not be placed against another because it will block the breathing through the sides. Pieces of cardboard or styrofoam sheets need to be placed between them. They can also be packed in a suitcase, between dry clothing, taking up a lot less space than the conventional fish bags.

That plastic was originally developed (I seem to remember hearing) by Russian scientists to aid in surgery. The plastic could be put over a wound to keep it from bleeding. But it would "breathe" just like skin, letting oxygen in and carbon dioxide out!
