I think my platy might have Ich!

My bright orange platy has some white spots on the tips of her tail and it looks like it might be Ich. She's acting just fine, even though my guppy is constantly mating with her, But it looks like her tail got bit up by someone. My friend said she'd give me some medicine for her, but I just thought I'd let you guys know. See ya!               guppyfreak456

Sorry to hear about the Ich. Was the platy (none / 0) (#1)

possibly stressed by a temperature drop and/or dirty water? Those are often causes.

Is the guppy mating with her or trying? There is a profound difference. :)

What is the medicine your friend will provide? It is probably for Ich. What brand is it? What is in it?

The reason I ask about what the medication is, is not to pick on you. But some reader might think that any old thing will do. An inappropriate treatment would probably increase your platy's chance of dying.

It has been claimed by at least one source that aquarists kill more fish with medications than they help heal. Can you imagine treating Aids with an aspirin or treating a cold with chemotherapy? ;)

Have you read the Immediate Help section on Ich? What suggested actions will you do to help your platy heal, in addition to medicating with an Ich treatment? Those may make all the difference in the world. :)

By the way, if the tail looks bit up, is the problem Ich or tailrot (bacterial infections). Could the platy be afflicted with both? Maybe you'd better read the "Finrot/Split fins/Tailrot/Red fins" section of Immediate Help too. ;)

Good luck and all the best!

Unc Immediate help isn't working. When you click on a topic/post all you get is "Can't find that story at this time". Really frustrating :) Probably connected to why we lost everything.
Before all else fails....do a 25% water change ;)

It works for me. Since I've got some security (none / 0) (#3)

parameters cranked up, I'm surprised I can get in and you can't. Also I'm still procrastinating over reformatting my C-drive and reloading Windows XP and it is getting a little buggy.

Both links just worked. I'm surely not trying to frustrate you or anyone else.

You probably have been clicking away on the links and refresh button. Wish I had more suggestions. :(

Lazy bum that I am I bought System Mechanic 6 (and it is about time to upgrade to 7). That gets run daily and sorts out an amazing amount of garbage. It also saves me having to track down several tasks I used to do separately with Norton Systemworks. My computer is beginning to resemble the (shot-up) WWII aircraft carrier Yorktown (if you have ever seen that old, old movie). It somehow keeps cruising along.

Hope you all are settling in after your great trek.

If you really need something from IH, e-mail me off list, I'll copy it and e-mail it back.

A way to do an end run on GL is to go to Google and type in Guppylog Immediate Help. Maybe that will get people there.

I was answering questions on the AKA beginner's forum this morning and yesterday and I shamelessly mined their Killietalk archives, checked one thing on plants from IH here and ran the GL Conversions and Tank volume calculator through its paces. Why should one reinvent the wheel? :)

Oh... unclescott at prodigy dot net

All the best!

So many neat fish and fish heads, so little time!
