my male marble molly keeps trying to breed with my female guppies and i now am about to have muppies, why would he ignore the female mollies?

he always follows the guppy females like kissing thier underside or something its annoying the crap out of me because i have 10 guppies (7 female, 3 male) and im trying to get fancy guppies but i cant set up a new tank, put a divider in or put the male in and breederbox because they are all full. i dont like my half mosquito fish half endler breeds breeding with a molly.

It just happens. These fish are so into breeding that they will try to impregnant just about anything. Other mollies, platies, guppies, swordtails, tetras. I even beleive unclescott to have mentioned in the past one of his guppies sneaking up on a very surprised male killi. Or perhaps he is just curious of the guppies. He will mate with the mollies don't worry. Just let him be.
 GOOD LUCK!!! :)

Oh yeah! I'd forgotten about that male gardneri, who if he hadn't been so surprised could have clobbered the male guppy. I'm glad he merely swam around in a brief identity crisis. :)

They won't. Mollies and Endlers don't cross.

If guppies and Endler's are the same, then very, (none / 0) (#3)

very rarely there is the possibility of a cross. Just because a male mollie is following a female guppy or Endler around, again doesn't mean that they are crossing.

Dr. Houde notes that when female guppies drop fry, they also release a pheromone (useful in nature) that alerts the male guppies to the need to court the female and with her cooperation he can mate with her. It must be done within about 48 hours of the dropping of the fry for the mating to effectively impregnate her.

A pretty good case, on the basis of the shape of the gonopodium of guppies and Endler's being exactly the same and DNA samples being the same can be made for that. Endler's have been described as Poecilia wingii. That may not hold up though. I might want to see them as different species and will certainly keep strains apart (as would most responsible aquarists) but what I desire and what goes on in the real world are often different. ;)

Mollies are close enough to guppies that one wouldn't be surprised to find that their females also release a pheromone and also need to mate within so many hours of birthing young. The rest of their behavior just passes the time.

A couple of people, sometimes quite thoughtfully, have wondered on Guppylog if their guppy males would ever pay attention to the female guppies. When it was the right time, what do you know! The right males responded to the right females! :)
