Female in labor.

My Dalmatian molly is showing signs of labor. I know It can take up too 10 days after the start of labor for her to deliver. Is it safe to put her in the breeder net? I don't want her to abort the pregnancy that's why I'm asking. She does not look prego though. She does have a boxy shaped body right now though. She is hiding from the other fish at the top of the tank wiggling her body then resting then doing that again. There is heavy coverage in the tank she is in so should I just leave her and scoop up the babies after they are delivered. I can tell that if she does deliver it is going to be a small batch. Most likely her first. She is still young. I can tell by her size. So I don't want them to all be eaten since it will be a small batch. Please help and hurry. Especially you unc, since you are probably the most experienced.

It sounds to me like she is about to drop. You should probably put her in a breeder net or another bowl if you don't want everybody eaten. Good luck!   guppyfreak456

What other fish are in the aquarium? If it is an (none / 0) (#1)

all mollie tank, no worries. Don't stress her by putting her in a net in that case. Just feed them some greens and this once, something meaty.

They take up to 10 days to deliver? Well a cycle is about 30 for guppies, longer for certain others. Where would the 10-day countdown come from? Fry released 10 days before delivery would probably die because of their lack of development.

I do think it is wise not to move a female after about 20 days from when she last dropped. So I suppose there is a 10 day factor in that. Gestation continues apace. I know we will still move them sometimes, but if she is comfortable in her own quarters or with her male, why mess around? That would be sort of on the "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" premise. :)

After that rotten grammar, I've got to go take a lie down. ;)

Well the thing that worries me is that I have 4 walleye fingerlings that I spared from the bait shop. I know that they will most likly eat any small fish being hunters and all. Also the she is pooping alot and the male won't stop following her he stays right behind her. There are no fry yet I just checked. And I ment that when mollies go into labor it can take 10 days for the first babies to come out. Althogh it usually takes only a hour or so into labor before the first ones to start popping out. And yes it is a all molly tank except for the minnows.

Hope that a walleye doesn't jump into it. ;)

Good luck
