I am new at this fish thing (and this website so sorry if this is in the wrong place). I have a female guppy and she had six babies but won't have more even though she is still fat and one can still see the babies inside of her.

The water is about 80 and all my other fish are doing great! Glory (name of female fish) seems to be doing fine she eats a lot and seems happy!:) but she had 6 babies two days ago and wont have any more even though she is still supper pregnant.:( Any help would be much appreciated :)

I don't see why there would be a problem. Then agian I am not a guppytoligist. So, I think that they will be fine. There might be some weak ones from lack of food. Now that I think about it what do guppy and other livbearer fish eat after the absorb their yolk sack inside the mom? I wonder if they have to just wait to eat untill they come out after they absorbed their yolk sac. Hmm. Oh well like I said I'm not sure but I don't see why a problem would accure. Are their guppytoligists? Hmm. Anyway hope I helped and good luck to you with your guppies! :)

I think I know whats happening. I had the same problem so I did a lot of reaserch and found out that female guppies under a lot of stress drop on average 1-3 fry early then wait for the others to grow a little more and have the rest.  Hope I helped.

That is an interesting form of superfoetation. (none / 0) (#5)

John Dawes, in his book on livebearers suggests that is the reproductive pattern for Heterandria formosa. They are so small that the full-grown 3/4th inch females only have room for a couple of their fully developed fry at a time. I haven't heard of that with guppies. What is your source for that information?

HELP! Why is my female not finishing (none / 0) (#3)
by Thride on Sun Apr 15, 2007 at 07:42:29 PM PST

Sorry for not putting enough information. i have checked google and Immediate Help several times but couldn't find any thing about it. I bought her a week and a half ago and she was REALLY pregnant at that time, she is still huge and is still square. i had to clean my tank today and there was still only six babys in it. they are doing great! her gravid spot is still huge and you can clearly see the eyes in her. At nights she always seems to be about to drop. she sits at the bottem of the tank and nips at any fish that gets close to her but dosent chase them. The babys she has had has no fear of the other fish and the other fish dont bother them. they even let the fry bump into them with out reacting. I just cant see why she isn't having any more fry. Because she is still definatly pregnant! Hope this is enough info and please help!!!!! and thanks for reading this!! :)

have you checked the google feature on guppylog for pregnancy and birth related topics? Have you checked immediate help section links at the top of the page? There has been a very great deal posted about guppies and the ways they give birth, what they look like afterwards, etc etc. She may have had many more babies than you have seen and those were the only ones remaining by the time you found them, or if she is young, that may be all she had this time. Sometimes after they give birth they still look pregnant, especially if they are older and larger guppies. Many different things could be going on here, and there are not enough details in your posts to tell. After you check out the "search guppylog" google feature and "immediate help" pregnancy and birth topics you might be able to tell us you have figured it out! let us know what you decide and good luck. methemom

I don't think that we know, especially from a (none / 0) (#7)

distance, if she will deliver young again. Give her the best TLC you can and space when she is going to drop. If her company are all guppies, feed them something meaty and provide shelter and some fry will be able to survive. The weak, stupid and unlucky may not make it. :(

In time you will be grateful that every fry doesn't make it. ;)

When replying to others in a forum's thread, either respond under the specific comment or at the bottom of the whole works. It is a lot easier to follow that way. :)

Good luck and all the best!
