story about the mystery of the dying fish

when I was much younger my cousin's family kept a tank of tropical fish. I overheard my aunt tell my mom this story. Seems they were finding dead fish all of a sudden, when the tank had been there for years with no problem; now all of a sudden, fish were just found floating dead on the water, sometimes one a day. After puzzling over this, they decided some of the fish were just getting old. Then one day my aunt walked in to find her 3 year old son holding a fish up to the light of the window (out of the tank) by the tail and examining it very closely, watching it wiggle. When the fish stopped wiggling, he very gently set the fish back into the water. End of story. methemom

That makes me mad. I hate hearing stories about fish suffering the consequences of our actions! I mean, I don't really blame the kid for being curious, but why would he do that!? Doesn't anybody watch that kid when he's near the fish tank? Sorry, I get over reactive when it comes to people doing things like that even if they don't mean it. No hard feelings right?
What? Were you expecting something funny?

I was about 6 when I heard the story (that would be 49 years ago!) and I felt sorry for the fish and wondered the same thing at the time! No hard feelings! methemom

That is why we need to talk to the kids and listen (none / 0) (#3)

so much. Don't do that doesn't work (with many kids) as well as explaining why one doesn't or does do something. But though I'm sure I would have explained about their breathing water, who could anticipate that action anyway? That's just not understanding and sad as that is, who could blame the child?

We did well listening when they were younger. I wish I hadn't let my job and community stuff gobble up so much time and energy later on.
