Wow, Isn't it a long time since I've spoken to you all, For the past few months i have been away, i have quite a story to tell. The main reason for not coming to guppylog anymore was my recent attraction to marine fish, and since i have had several marine tanks, including a very well built breeding set up which i breed clownfish and cardinals in, I also frag corals, and grow them. Its surprising how affordable its now become, Especially for me a 16 year old student.

But thats not the point, The main point is what I'm left with, I decided to start all over again, new tanks new set ups and new fish. So while i was browsing my lfs i came across, a small tank, bursting full of vibrant colours, i had to take a closer look. Yes, The humble guppy. What i started out with. From guppies came breeding exotic livebearers, breeding chiclids, angels discus, catfish, tetras. Then from the tropicals (which gradually faded) came the inverts in marine, feather dusters, scallops to damselfish. Then i moved onto breeding clownfish and cardinals, keeping sps and lps, propagating them and then searching for them. And now I'm left with a single breeding pair of Maroon gold band clowns, a bubble tip anemone. And a tank full of guppies. Nothing still excites me more than them, I got bored of them for a while but now, I'm strangely attracted to them again.

So I'm just here to say hi again, and proud to be a guppy owner, even though i own a marine, which for some reason people find much more appealing.

I love guppies, and i love fish keeping, My current biology teacher has a phd in fish physiology, thats one way to get the title of 'Doctor'...

I hope your all well and having an excellent Christmas.

all the best

Welcome back Mollie-Guppy! December, (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Tue Dec 25, 2007 at 04:14:18 PM PST

despite some trouble getting onto Guppylog, has seen several "old time Guppyloggers" stop by. How does it sound to be an old-timer at 16? :)

I knew that you had branched out into other fishes, but was unaware of your breeding of discus. Likewise you mentioned that you were investigating marine aquariums. If you are breeding clownfish and Banggai cardinal fish, you really have gotten a handle on them and salt water tanks! What does one feed their fry?

You mentioned that the marine hobby is more reasonable (expense wise) that you thought it might be. I would guess that might be in part because those fish are now being captive bred and I'm sure that drops prices. Nine years ago those Banggai cardinals were selling for $100 apiece, probably a little less than 50 British Pounds at today's exchange rate. I recall you as an aggressive researcher on the Net too. If "they" are breeding those fish, there must also be more info on them than a few years ago.

And I can identify with your "homecoming" to guppies. They can be so darn beautiful.

It often provokes a grin to see someone bidding in an auction. What he or she is pursuing is a species they had when first into the hobby. :)

Hope your Christmas and that of all those at Guppylog has been a merry, blessed and special one. And may the new year be one of the best yet!

Haha, Oldtimer would suit me well, Those white hairs have come early for me, I have few too many and expect to be fully white by say 20 ish ?.

I'm currently feeding the fry on rotifers, then they go onto brine shrimp, and eventually crushed flake. To get them ready for there new homes (although i expect most of them to feed them live or frozen). I currently make my own blend of food for the adults and it gives me good batches every time.

Yes marine is becoming increasingly captive bred however the price of benggai's are still high, Mine are wild caught, and they are so easy to breed its unbelievable, The female puts the eggs inside the males mouth, and he takes care of them, and after hardly any work on your part, out he spits identical fry slightly bigger than guppies. However due to them being put on the cities list this upcoming year i expect the price to rise considerably. I expect to keep mine the same, Helping conservation of the reefs.

I consider the bengaii to be the guppy of the marines, and i was really referring to the price of marine set ups, i can obtain a fairly nice fully stocked set up 4 foot for around $300.

Thanks a lot unclescott, and I'm glad to be back.

Have a good Christmas
