So glad to be back. Heres an update on my tank.

Well, a lot has happened over the months, but here are the main things.
My 3 molly fry-One died a few months ago. It was rather thin compared to the other fry and one day it just died. The other two are now all grown up. I male dalmatian sail molly and one female are living with their mom. The male has been mating with them, but oh well. I pretty sure that the dead creamsicle sailfin molly was the father now. One because in the past few weeks my males dorsal has been getting bigger and longer. So he is indeed a sailfin. Also the babies even though taken after there mother are dalmatian seem to have an orangish tint to their white scales. And the male has a bit of orange by his mouth.

The green swordtails- well after one of the two females gave birth she began hiding a lot and I would only see here every once in a while. Then one day she was just gone. I checked around the tank to see if she jumped but I didn't see anything. So my guess is she died and was eaten before I even noticed. About the fry. I was only able to save two. They two have grown quickly and I have one male who has a full gonopodium, but is still working on his sword which is about an inch-inch half now. The female is a bit more robust and he is long and slender.

Well, I think that about sums it up.

Welcome back Q-man! (none / 0) (#1)

Need you here running us through our paces,:

Glad your mollies continue apace. Disappearing swordtails aren't uncommon. She could have jumped and worked her way across the room. (Ah... and do you have a cat or dog.?)

Or, since your aquarium is probably well cycled now and very active biologically now, both cannibalism and just active bacterial action could dispose of the body fairly quickly. Possibly both were involved.

Swordtails, like so many live bearers and killies, are somewhat cylindrical in shape. That is the design of a fishy sprinter. When startled they will explode for 3 or more feet - in the water or out of it. That kind of instant, almost reflexive jumping, works fairly well in nature to avoid predators (be they fish, birds, reptiles or even mammals) at first shadow. That doesn't always work out so well in aquaria. :)

Sometimes moving an aquarium stand or bookcase, after a few years, which has held an aquarium or two can be startling. One may find a surprising number of crispy critters. :(

Hope it is a wonderful Christmas for your and yours!
