Okay. Are there going to be fry in the tank? A ten gallon would be great for fry because they would have a lot of room. If you were putting adult guppies, then I would say 15 at the MAX. Good luck and happy guppy breeding!

Methemom is right.  In my old 10 gallon that I no longer have due to a 600 mile move, I had more then I should have.  I was given a 29 gallon that was VERY over popl. by about 250 fish.  So I moved the males into my 10 gallon and I also took about 175 fihs the the pet store.  I had way more the your 1-2 inch fish per gallon but until I was able to weed some of them off on family and friends I did a tank cleaning every other day at about 25% water change and they all seemed to do pretty good.
Now I am not telling you this you can put that many fish in the tank but if you had to you can... YOu just have to clean very offten.
But rule is 1-2 inch of fish to 1 one gallon of water.
Happy fish keeping :-)

using the "immediate help" section at the top of the page should uncover a few links to help you decide. general rule of thumb is about 1-2 gallons per inch of fish... so, not as many fish as you might want.. but those that you keep will be healthier. frequent water changes can help keep a few more fish alive in a smaller aquarium but it is alot more to maintain. Lets hear from you when you decide what to do. methemom

J-ME, I'm pretty sure that when you refer to (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Wed Jan 03, 2007 at 06:29:37 PM PST

cleaning the tank every second day, you are referring to doing things like gravel vacuuming part of the gravel and changing a percentage (25-45%) of the water. You have probably treated the water and let it sit a bit. It is close in temperature to the tank.

Would that be correct? The reason I rhetorically ask is that what you would do and what someone brand new to the hobby might sometimes do (like a total change of the tank) is quite different. The new person doesn't realize that they totally trash what ever nitrogen cycle is there. And we don't want that to happen to them. :)
