Would adding a feature for authors to edit their diary or log entries be possible? Even if it was in a manner that only allowed them to do so before they were commented on would be a help. I just created a comment to a diary entry and despite proofreading in the preview window I realized three spelling errors after posting...

You could just use Microsoft word to write your comments and spell check then copy and paste into the window, so do you need a spell checker / comment editor function ;)

Even those of us with full editing priviledges can't edit comments. We can only edit the original story so I don't like your chances of this being an available feature :(

Good Golly Miss Molly! (none / 0) (#3)

Molly-Guppy has a great idea about typing a thought out in Word. In fact one could highlight, copy and paste the comment/log/diary one is responding to and place it at the top of the Word document.

Sometimes I will chop it up into the specific things I would like to applaud and that which I would respond to in terms of questions of clarification or whatever.

There is a danger in just pasting back into the HTML space here. Especially with Word's punctuation, some of what is typed will be a gobbly-gook of numbers and code. I've previewed and missed some of that stuff. Then I too am stuck with James' dilemma.

Can members of GL delete their entry? If not, drop an off list e-mail to Scott L, miskairal, me, Reza, maggie1270, lomelindi and an other familiar name and ask them to delete it. Maybe cc to a couple. Then, having already copied your comment and fixed it, you re-submit it.

It is not hard to do. The dicey part is that if another comment has been posted after yours has, deleting will also delete everything after it. That actually was useful one time, but I recall doing that and wiping out a comment by miskairal. I feel really badly about that and e-mailed her to apologize.

In rare cases one could copy the following comment  e-mail it to the party after you and ask them to post it after you make your changes.

In most cases though, I have caught my blunders too late. Then the advice is probably that we just have to "live with it." ;)

I applaud your interest in this James. Glad you take pride in what you write and want to present it as effectively as possible.

atb!

This comment was double checked in Word. Errors were found. Then another was and this was copied, deleted, pasted back in and tweaked. No punctuation was harmed. ;)

Ok - sorry. It just doesn't rock the same way (none / 0) (#7)

though. ;)

I still remember when someone here, who types, pardon me, word processes, um ... keyboards every bit as badly as I do, addressed me as uncle sot. If that is the impression, gotta proof read better. :)

Yeah, I don't consider myself in the bad keyboarding skills category, kind of a byproduct of the trade. Unfortunately though I spent too many years playing online games with the current generation who seems to think that punctuations make perfectly adequate substitutions for letters and even entire sentences. OMG!!!

I don't think I've ever heard Unc issue forth a disparaging or discouraging word, it's applaudable.

I'll take using an external editor with spell check under advisement, it's sound advice after all. Most likely laziness will wind up causing me, and subsequently the rest of you, to deal with the occasional punctuation or spelling error... Thanks for the info!

Some of the browsers now have an integrated spellcheck thingy. I'm sure firefox is one. Try typing into google the name of your browser and spell check and see if you can find something that will do it all for you as you type.

Ahh, here you go. Here's one for Internet Explorer
ieSpell. I can guarantee snapfiles as a very very safe site. There is no way you will get any virus or trojan type thing from anything you download there.
Here's one for Firefox
Spellbound.

The only problem with using Word (apart from the fact you've paid good money for something you could obtain much cheaper or for free ;) is that it leaves you with odd characters in place of quotation marks and apostrophes, things like miskairal20%s fish tank 8-)

Hope that is easier for everyone.
