If you move a female guppy that is ready to drop will she like pull the fry back and not drop, then after 24 hours and you move her back will she redrop the fry back into the belly like she is ready to have them...?

I moved one of my females yesterday who was ready to have the fry.  She was square, breathing funny, flexing, and looked just plan unhappy.  Well as I watched her through the day it was like she pulled the fry back up into her and her belly went to a pink color.  This morning she was the same way so I thought I messed up by moving her and she aborted.  I moved her back into the big tank and now 12 hours later she looks ready to drop again.

Will they do that if they don't like the breeding tank that I put them in?

I dont want her to have them in the main tank because I have 2 blue gouramis and I dont' want them to eat the babies.

When I moved her I used a cup, filled it with water, very slowly moved her into the cup with out bring her out of the water and placed her in the breeding tank and she never left the water.

Update on the 2 month old whos tail was victem to the crawdad.  his tail is coming back the most awsome red.  I still have him a tank to himself so he does not get picked on and so I know that he gets his food.

UPdate on move.  We are 80% packed now and just waiting on the moving day to come... Aug. 20.  I can't wait.

Fish doiing good so far.

What was the breeding container which stressed (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Sun Aug 06, 2006 at 10:25:25 PM PST

the female so? Would she be more comfortable in a 1-gallon drum bowl with a little Najas or Java moss?

If she dropped dead fry, she will probably drop again in a month, if she wasn't hurt too badly internally. That is why, while many of us have moved a female in the last week, we really shouldn't do that. (Boy, do I have a list of "I really shouldn't have done that.")

Will she still drop a few fry from this batch is an interesting question. While I suppose it is possible, if she was dropping still born fry, I hope she got them all out of her system.

I seem to remember that you have several tanks. In three weeks, if you want fry from her, could you give her quarters in 2.5 or 5-gallon tank all by herself? You, ahem, might need a ten-gallon for growing out her fry anyway. ;)

Some guppy people, in a warm room, will even put their well-fed females in their own (covered) one gallon drum bowl or wide-mouthed 1-gallon pickle jar. Daily 100% or 95% water changes from an established aquarium will give her clean enough water. She is whisked out after dropping.

I recall the pit in my stomach (a Pepto bismol moment) when that happened to one of my fish. Move her sooner and give her a little more space. :)

All the best!

Have you tried using a breeding net instead of moving her to another tank/container? They are relatively cheap (about $5-$6 at WalMart) and you can scoop her into it and hang it on the side. Please don't use breeding traps (the plastic boxes of death) though.

I am going to get one tonight after hubby gets home form work.  I thought about it last night.  I just didn't know if it was like the plastic box of death or not.  I do know that if she does not have the fry with in 24 hours you need let her go then get her again in another 24 hours.

Thank you for the thought
Happy fish keeping :-)

What is in the tank that you can't just leave (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Mon Aug 07, 2006 at 05:54:21 PM PST

her there? This is even related to those spawning egglayers.

An issue I share is that if I don't have a container spacious enought for the female to comfortably drop in, I don't have space to raise the fry anyway. Sadly I might just as well let them be eaten until I do have space for the next fry. :(

atb!

I have the Bala Shark and more guppies and also the blue gourmias.  Its not that I don't have the room for the guppy to drop its kust that when I moved her to the 1.5 gallon so she could she became what looked to be no longer pg.  So I moved her back into the main tank.  I think she did not like the 1.5 gallon and thats why she did what she did.  After I moved her back into the main tank it was like she was ready to drop again.  So I thought that instead of moving her again I would just put her in a breeding net (which is alot bigger then I thought).   This is the hardest tiem that I have had with mamas that are ready to drop....
Happy fish keeping :-)
