One does have to be careful there - or anywhere. I stopped by there for a dog treat my regular LFS does not have and a couple of weeks before, while doing our unplanned rabbit rescue, there was a quick PetSmart run for a small bag of rabbit chow, bedding and a plastic box for the bedding. All of that rabbit stuff accompanied the rabbit to a friend who actually was thrilled to give it a home. Giving her the package of food and bedding gave her time to get more organized and got the poor animal out of the bathroom which had been turned over to it in our home. (We were thrilled to get the bathroom back too.)
Dwarf platys were asked about here a couple of weeks ago - you didn't Googlle search Guppylog for dwarf platys yet did you? ;)
Those particular "dwarf platys" both turned out to be female guppies, so make sure of what you are buying. Dwarf in that case sounds like stunted platy too.
I would go to Google and do an image search for platy and Xiphophorus maculatus. Get a feel for what they can look like.
Usually there is no need for culling, in that strains usually breed true (unless they were all mixed up at a shop). As you read what you google from Guppylog you will find that they are livebearers, are pretty good companions for guppies, and are fairly tolerant of fry (though females may either drop fry all at once or over several days).
I am glad to answer you after hearing about this dwarf platy business before, in order to warm you to check what platys look like.
You do get this week's OOPS! award for not Google searching GL for platy (300+ hits) platys (180 + hits) and dwarf platys (22 hits).
Still don't want to kill you. :)
The hobby has long spelled more than one mollie, mollies and more than one platy, platys. I didn't make up that practice - so please don't kill me for that. ;)
atb!
