Well i made a boo boo.

Somehow my baby fry net (brine shrimp net) that is perfect for my 1 gallon fry tank)  went missing. I needed to move them to the spare 1 gallon (yeah I know like we all have one of those laying around :D) since I found a leak in the old one.  I had to scoop them out and move to new tank in a flash since they were soon to be waterless. (thank goodness for pre cycling water and i got some water from thier tank i could salvage in there.)
I quickly grabbed the only other net i had..medium net just wide enough to fit the width of the fry tank. I was gently removing them when one tryed to escape past the net while i was scooping out...and he got wedged to my horror against the side of the tank....now im about to pass out in a wet puddle with fry in the net. I scooped out the fry that was in the net into the new tank and checked in for the squished fry. he was swimming around with black goo out his one eye . Now im really like WTH...so i gave him a few more secs of calm scooped him out into his own glass of water to keep an eye on him to see if he was suffering and needed to be euthanized.
But quite to my surprise he is fine. the balck goo gone and he is happy as a lark..i see the indent in his face were the goo was i am assuming it was his eye...can you pop thier eye out and they can survive??  I have him here with me he ate and is just to my pure amazement fine no bleeding resting on bottom ect.
Well other than that the tanks doing great 75 gallons is proving to be a learning experience for me LOL one of my guppies had babies today and i acctually got to see them drop woot!  i got 3 in the safty of a baby net. Momma looks great..but i think she made all the other mommas start to drop too LOL they are all showing the signs and swimming in the bubble wall.
On the comedic side my 2 blue platty's (males) are playing out their randition of Brokeback Aquarius.  They wont stop trying to mate with eachother O_o Guess i should find them so girlfriends LOL

It never ceases to amaze me what animals can survive through and good on you for giving the little baby a chance.

Fish do recognise you I'm sure of that. My fish will come flying up if it's me but not for others as other people don't feed them. Yeah, I know it's all dictated by their stomachs but so what, it's nice to be wanted :)

A friend used to tease an oscar of another person. (none / 0) (#11)

That oscar would slap water at him when he came by the aquarium.

The subject of giant gouramis (Osphronemus goramy) came up the other night in Peoria. One of those would rush up to the tank side when a person would approach the tank. After the enthusiastic greeting, if no food was forthcoming, the over-foot long fish would slap water at that viewer.

Wow. Netbreeders really can cause that much damage? Hiroshima2 plays between the glass and my netbreeder and shes fine. And between the glass and net, is where my surviving uncaught fry like the hangout.

Net, not net breeder.

HAHA and he shall be called lumpy and he will be my lumpy. LOL  Im considering getting him his own mini tank and putting him at my bedside we are becoming attached LOL (lets all say it together now "I will not start another tank.)

Moral of the story is.... have an extra net of each size you need LOL at least now I will. I dont think I survive the horror again.

OR.. (Here comes L with her crazy fish-moving ideas) OR you can try another way of moving fry. :)

If they're small enough, try a turkey baster.  As long as you're fast, they probably don't even know whats coming.  Alternatively, get a small cup or a jar or something of the sort, submerge it, and lift it when the fry get over the mouth.  This can be facilitated with some food sprinkled on the surface.  Many times, they don't even react to what's happened.  If they don't spook too easily, even a ladle will work.  The best idea with moving any fish is keeping them in the water.

I did that very thing just 2 days ago. Gotta love a turkey baster! They really didn't know what was up. I have them floating in a tupperware in my tank because there is another "about to pop" female in my breeder, So I also use the baster to clean out the bottom of the tub, and to trade out water 2 times a day. Easier on them than swapping containers all the time.
I have a one eye in my tank to, not sure how it happened, but he seems to be ok. And I am not breeding for show or anything so I don't mind as long as he doesn't seem to be any worse for the ware due to it.

Cheers!

Be careful though. All turkey basters are not (none / 0) (#6)

made equal. A few months ago I got one with limited suction and dribbled live food in a line towards a tank. I still use it, but put my finger over the outlet before going anywhere.

The one which works best is the one I took apart. Then the top of the hard tube was lined with silicon aquarium sealer and the bulb was jammed back on. After it was left for a week to set up, it worked very well. There was no leaking around the bulb.

I wonder if that teflon tape used in pumbing could be used. That would make taking apart and cleaning the baster easier. :)

That siliconed one of mine is literally wearing out as the bulb is getting translucent. Got a new baster from a friend as a thank you for a couple of small things I did for him. Great tool for around the aquarium. Thoughtful thank you too!

If you don't have a baster come Christmas, hint that a baster, such and such a net, an 8 oz canister of food, five-way gang valve and so on, make great stocking stuffers. And if you can shanghai a pair of panty hose for a stocking, so much the better. ;)

ATB!
unc
who is watching Mrs unc search for that new package of panty hose. :)
