well, i'm wondering about this new order...

don't worry, the shipping process has been explained to me, it's just that i'm wondering if the fish load will be too much for my current cycle?

i posted a "my tanks" thing a week or so ago and nothing has changed. my 10 gal has the 2 mollies in it, the 1 male and 1 female. i'd like to get 2 more females, a guppy trio, and a platy trio.

i'm ordering from one place, Aquariumfish.net. they have some really nice fish there. i'm also getting 2 ghost shrimp.

anyway, the amount of fish will end up 10, perfect for a 10 gal, but i'm afraid my cycle won't be able to take such a sudden increase in fish and i'll end up with a huge ammonia spike.

would my cycle be okay if i did daily partials for a week or so? i would add the fish more gradually, but i have no where else to put them and each order is 25 US dollars shipping. i really have my heart set on having the 3 livebearers combined, and this site has such better quality fish than my LFS, which is really an hour and a half away.

i DO have a 5 and 1 gal not in use, but the 5 isn't fully cycled and will be occupied by a male betta in 10 days anyway! so even if i could put them there, i would still be adding fish every2 days or so. i'd also hate to put them in a 75% cycled aquarium, because they are so nice and i'd never forgive myself if they died from "new tank syndrome".

i'm really leaning towards daily partials here, but please, if you guys have suggestions, i'm bleeding on the sidewalk here!

This is a bit late, but whenever I want new fish, I only get 3 maximum, once a week. You have a 5 gallon thats 75% cycled, could you possibly add gravel and alot of water from your other tank into that one to speed up the process? I saw that you ordered 8 fish + 2 ghost shrimp, even if one of the trios could go into the 1 gallon for a couple of days that may be better than putting 10 fish into an aquarium with other fish that you are more than likely attached to? I lost my favourite beautiful goldfish when I added in a baby goldfish and a bristlenose, they all got white spot and an ulcer that happens under the skin- which I guess came with the new ones who may have been stressed after travelling. All of them died, including my snail :'(  I have since learnt quarantine can help stop that.

Good advice, I'm sorry about what happened in your (none / 0) (#2)

tank.

Nancy, you are effectively using your tank to quarantine too many fish. You may get away with it. You may lose them all.

Feed sparing. If you have floating plants, so much the better. Can you get more in there. ;)

Leave the kights off the first day. Then, if it doesn't heat up the tank, make sure the light is on 12-14 house so the plants thrive.

Have gravel so your shrimp can adjust. (Smooth bottoms seem to correlate with some of those going into shock.)

Oh, and did I suggest feeding sparingly until the nitrogen cycle has righted itself. ;)

This sort of thing is all too common among us where we try and get our shipping money's worth. It also is a danger for those who attend a fish auction and stay to the end - when everything, just about, is given away for a song.

Good luck and all the best!

thanks unc. i didn't actually realize how bad of an idea it all was until...you get it.

erm,  i'm not using the 10 as the QT, i'm using it as my main until the 40 comes. and cycles.

thanks for the suggestion on feeding. i'll skip feeding the first day and then "feed sparingly" until about a week. unless you think more time is needed.

and water changes, right? to keep ammonia down?
