Once again, Im talking about my SAE/CAE. This time I actually need pro help.

Spaz has been keeping to himself mostly, and I bought him a lil cave to pimp out in. But now im really wondering what he is for real. I like him alot, but if hes a CAE im going to have to get rid of him.
Anybody (unclescott, im depending on you though), any identification tips?

Take a look at the following article. (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Sun Jun 04, 2006 at 12:18:34 PM PST

http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/

The illustrations are line drawings. Sometimes drawing are more help than actual photographs, other times they are not so helpful.

If that article doesn't help you ID your fish, highlight and copy the scientic names of those critters, paste them into a Google image search. That should do the trick.

By the way, what ever that algae eater is, it shouldn't be changing its attitude quite that quickly. (Oh blast! Here it comes again!) Have you considered a partial water change. ;)

Good luck on the ID. Ah and you could always call the shop which sold you that fish. They should have a wholesaler's invoice listing it. (Not that whole-sale places are always correct.)

Thanks unclescott, you helped a lot as usuall. But now I know its not a SAE but either a CAE or False SAE. Sorry but do you have another little linky thing?

If the article gave you a couple of nominees, (none / 0) (#3)

take the names and paste them in, one at a time, in Google, when it is set on an image search.

Garra taeniata, false SAE

Chinese Algae Eater, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri

See who looks most like your fish. Just knowing which fish shows up far more frequently in shops, I would nominate candidate number two in the above list.

Ya, its a CAE for sure. But what to do with it when/if it becomes aggresive?

Any other bottom feeder suggestions other then a pleco (I have live plants) or a snail?

if you feel attached to him, you could always buy him a 10 gal, maybe used, just for him to "pimp out" in. you could put the 10 gal in you room, and just have him there when you want to look at a huge fish.

if you aren't interested in even having a fish that dangerous around, you could ask the shop where you got him if they would like him back. often, if you offer for free, they are more than happy to accept him back. remember that you could be condemning another aquarist to take him in accidentally.

i'm going to be trying out ghost shrimp in about a week. i can tell you how they work out. they seem pretty peaceful. knowing my luck though, they'll send me the only ghost shrimp in the world who's as bloodthirsty as dracula himself.

Thanks a lot Nancy, and you use the term "Pimp out" correct! ;)
I wasnt attatched to him at first, he was only a tool to keep my tank clear of food scraps, but now he shows a lot of personality and charm. Hes the pimpest scavanger there is!

P.S. How much do you think a 10 gallon would run for, with the filter and the tank cost? I dont think I would have to use a heater for him.

Walmart has a "starter kit" for around $30. Make sure it's the one that say's "does not include heater. They have the filter, hood with lights and all that. You just supply the gravel, decorations and it sounds like you already have a fish for it.
Good luck. If I had my 75 gallon I'm getting for free I would sell you one of my 10's for cheap. But I need them for a while yet.
Gotta go. My kids are getting grumpy and tired. Maybe I'll get an early birthday present and they'll go to bed easy tonight. Tomorrow is my big day. I'll be 29 for the 4th time. Night Night.

Ill try with your method of rationalization unclescott. But not for spaz, hes in my parents 50 gal goldfish tank, HE KILLED HIROSHIMA! HIROSHIMA WAS =SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  CLOSE TO GIVING BIRTH!
Spaz was one of my favorites buy now I could bare the idea of giving him away after he MURDERD HIROSHIMA!

Any other bottom feeder suggestions? No pleco or snails, Im growing plants.

he did WHAT?? (none / 0) (#13)
by Nancy4Fishes on Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 02:24:10 PM PST

how do you know it was him who got her? was she just lying on the floor or was she, like, torn up? or did she just disappear intirely?

if she disappeared, check your filter. i have a very strange female molly who got herself stuck in the filter once. not the intake, she was really IN the FILTER. i don't have a clue how she got there. she is WAY too big to fit in the intake!

i hope you're wrong and she died from some subtle parasite or something...i'm still really sorry she died, though.

I asked my mom if she would mind me getting another SMALL tank, with my cash. The reply was a short, harsh, "No." OWW!! Looks like Spaz is going to have to play nice or go to a long timeout in Walmart.
OOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr.........I could try to convince my parents like with my original tank.............????????....................hmmmmmmmm........

I shouldn't be dissembling like this, but if your (none / 0) (#10)
by unclescott on Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 05:58:38 AM PST

first tank is a 10-gallon, would it be possible to put it on a metal stand and put another 10-gallon tank underneath. Then the same air pump, with an extra valve or a five-way valve can often run everything. An outlet strip could be discreetly suspended from the wall (behind everything but off the floor and away from potential water spills) to take care of the need for electrical outlets.

As an aside, it is not a bad idea to have airpumps off the floor. If the electricity stops, filter air lines are less likely to siphon water back into the pump. (They do sell a modestly priced check-value to prevent this too.) Around here several years ago we had some heavy rains and basements flooded. A local shop keeper about ran out of airpumps!

Sometimes space is the big reason why no more aquariums are allowed. Over-under stands don't take a lot more room. (Ah, the fine art of rationalization!)

All the best!
