Ok - people keep saying we need to fix this, so lets look at it here, and suggest changes.

[editor's note, by Scott Lockwood] So, what - no one reads these things unless I put them on the front page?

Thank you for taking the time to submit a log entry!<P>
<b>Here are some general guidelines for new stories (if you choose to ignore them your question may not be answered):</b>
<UL>
<LI>Pick the topic carefully! Try your best to match the topic with the story you're submitting.
<LI><b>Consider if what you are about to write would be better suited as a Diary entry. One liners or short questions should be diary entries. Questions that are already answered in the Immediate Help section should be diary entries. Foe example, asking how long until your guppy gives birth, if she's pregnant or how to stop her eating her fry should all be asked as Diaries.</b>
<LI>Please try your best with your spelling and grammar. Questions asked with a lack of capitals or punctuation are likely to get voted out. If you have trouble, say so and someone might offer to fix it for you.
<LI>Only the html tags listed are allowed in story text. No HTML is allowed in "title" or "dept." fields.
<LI>You must preview at least once. Please read over your story carefully.
<LI>Check all URLS!
<LI>Check all facts! :-)
<LI>Write a brief intro that will appear on the main page eg. front page or section page. Don't repeat the intro in the Extended copy section, just tell us what you want here.
<LI>This site is community-edited (mostly), so don't complain to the admins if your story doesn't get posted. If you're logged in, you'll see a "Moderate Submissions" link to the right. This is how you decide what gets posted here! Use it!

I think the suggestion to newbies to post to the diary is excellent (being that I am still a newbie here).  I was a bit confused when I did my first post as to whether to do a diary or log.  I was afraid the diary would just be for my own viewing - so I chose to do a log.

Fortunately, y'all voted it to be posted and here is where I have decided to stay for all my fishy fishy questions.  :-)

I wrote the darn thing with help from gg and unc to start with. I've changed it as many times as everyone has suggested and I still can't get it right. Let someone else do it I say!

Hey now! You've done an EXCELLENT job! *I* am perfectly happy with it! But, we keep hearing people say, "Oh, it should tell you [Blah] before you post a story", so, here's an opportunity to debate it.

Please don't take offense - this place wouldn't run without you and Uncle Scott.

Same here. It looks real good to me. One quick thing to add... If in doubt post a diary.

Ok, that's cool - just write exactly what you think should be added, and tell us where you think it should go.

Right under the  heading when you open the post a log link should be the following...
If you are new please post a diary (add the link to post diary here). They get read sooner and you will recieve your answer quicker.
Just my suggestion. Also maybe it can be in big bold letters or a bright color.
ALso maybe the post a log can be re-named to something us frequent users see at a glance but new people may not notice and the diary link be made big and bold.

Can you copy and paste the above that Scott did with all the html code and put your bit in exactly where you think it should go. Doesn't matter if you dont' have the html code, we just want to see where you mean for it to go and then have others comment on that idea.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a log entry!

{For those who are new to the site please post a diary entry as it will be answered sooner and may have been posted before. Repeat questions posted in log form tend to get voted down. (Put a link to diary entry here)} (have new lines in bright colors)
Here are some general guidelines for new stories (if you choose to ignore them your question may not be answered):

  • Pick the topic carefully! Try your best to match the topic with the story you're submitting.

Questions that are already answered in the Immediate Help section should be diary entries. • Only the html tags listed are allowed in story text. No HTML is allowed in "title" or "dept." fields.
  • You must preview at least once. Please read over your story carefully.

Also if we changed the title of post a log to Articles on Fish Keeping. It may make Newbies think twice. I had my Hubby look at the site and he thought that Post a log entry sounded like what we here term our diary entries. Kind of like a daily log.
Again just my thoughts.

NOTE: The HTML here is visable ON PURPOSE! I wanted something that people could copy and start hacking on.

But put other options on lines above the (none / 1) (#4)
by unclescott on Wed Jun 21, 2006 at 09:23:00 PM PST

explanation of Logs. In a sence offer the option of a diary first to new members both because that is most likely to fit their entry and respond to their anxiety of trying to get quick advice about a sick guppy.

They will not get a chance to ignore what a log is. ;) At that point they don't care what a log is.

After they become more familiar with the site, having served a couple day apprenticeship, they will figure out what a log is. If they never get to that point, maybe it is just as well. And they will probably still be happy with the diary and answers.

In the comments under the survey, miskairal suggested:

"Hey, just a thought. Can we make a new box to shove above it? (the Post a Log)

No, better still. What say I move the frappr link and Conversion page links to down in the menu box and replace them with a diary link?? That way up the top right of the page you would have Immediate Help and Post a Diary links only?"
******************

I would suggest putting a diary thing first.

Then put · Immediate Help For Newbies! (and oldies but goodies)

Then include F.A.Q. For Newbies!

Then include the frappr thing.

Finally (or maybe even after search) put
· Post a log entry

The order you suggest things in, is often the order people will attempt to do things, whether they understand all of the instructions or not.

All the best!

Again,

For technical reasons (read the rest of the comments in that story) it's impossible to do that. I can't even MOVE those links without losing them entirely.

We can put another box in that will go above that one, that I can do (time, time, time, look whats become of me :-) ) at some point.
