Our 3 week old fry had been doing just fine till 4 days ago since then they have been dying off 1 each day. They were in a breeder in the big tank. I checked ph, ammonia, etc nothing wrong there. I moved them all to a hospital tank. They look fine, swimming and eating fine. I just find a dead one on the bottom each day. Nothing unusual looking, no trauma, discolorations or anything just dead. Any thoughts? We only have 6 left!

I moved them all, added a bit more salt, added the ammonia remover just to make sure and no more deaths. I never used bottled water either-sounds really expensive though!

You're not using most/all distilled water, are you?  We made that mistake once, at a petstore clerk's urging, and suffered the same effect.

I have been surprised by the number of parties who are using bottled drinking water or "spring water." In most cases that is RO water which has been rebuilt with calcium, magnesium and potassium (the latter being responsible for the taste to humanfolk). When one figures the dangerous stuff in some tap waters that certainly may be a better drinking water for people and, at least for a while, better for the fish as a quick fix.

Long run, I wonder if there will be a loss of trace elements by the guppies, et al, because of their vulnerability to mineral loss (and replacement) through their gills. Maybe add just a pinch of cichlid salts, Equilibrium, RO Right or another items used to remake RO water.

All the best!

Fry "mystery deaths" are one of the most (none / 0) (#1)

frustrating parts of the hobby. Look carefully at your fry. Are there any spots or discoloration on them. Are their fins "clamped" or pulled together?

Sometimes fry get an illness which the adults will get later. Being small, their immune systems aren't as tough as those of the adults. (I.E. When velvet hits one of my tanks, the fry clamp up first.)

It sounds like retaliation for your question and it really isn't. Angelhologram posted 20 questions, several of which you have answered and I followed it up with 21-40. Those are useful checklists for me with my own fish too.

Please look at http://www.guppylog.com/story/2005/6/24/82111/0134
and answer the questions which you can, if they weren't already addressed.

This isn't meant to be a grand inquisition. It is more like what we do when our computers get balky. We try one solution or detail after an other. :)

Good luck and all the best!
