NEON TETRAS
----------
DARK FRY

Are guppies compatible with Neon Tetras?

If someone would please give me some tips on how to care for the Neon Tetras. They will be living with the guppies, hopefully.

-----------------

Also, in an unrelated topic...

I have a big batch of fry that are 9 days old today. All are very healthy, and I haven't had any deaths! =)   One fry is very dark. All the others are the regular color like a tan-type color. He or She is very dark, almost jet black.

Is this something that indicates disease or is it just it may be a darker-colored strain of the guppy?

On the other hand (none / 0) (#3)

I've seen fry turn fark from ammonia or nitrite poisoning in new tanks. There really is no way for me to give a more definite answer without knowing the color of the mother and specifics of the tank. Do you hae any test kits so you could let us know the readings?
As to neon tetras, yes they are fine with guppies but tend to carry more disease. Neon tetras are also best kept in groups rather then as single fish or pairs.

It is just one fry, and it's been dark since its birth. The ammonia is not a problem in my tanks.

Well I'll start with the fry question. See when my guppies start developing color black is usually the first. It could be that your little dark one is a half black. Or it could be a male as mine seem to develop color before the females. Just a couple things I've learned.

As for Neon Tetra's!!! I have four living quite contentedly with my female Guppies. They are going into the 75 gallon in a few weeks with all the Gups. For mine I just feed them a basic tropical fish flake. My Females are voracious eaters so when they are done I drop in a few more crushed flakes for the Neon's. And I currently am not using a heater on the tanks. I have 10 gallons up and running. Cycling my 75 gallon Beast.
One thing I do is check on them often and pay close attention to their colors. They don't seem to mind a bit of salt. I use 1 TABLEspoon (15ml) for each 10 gallons. When doing water changes I add a TEAspoon (5ml) every 3 changes.

I'm not sure if this is the ideal set-up for Tetra's as I've read they like softer water than the guppies. I may do a tetra only tank when we move to a larger house. I only have room for maybe 4 tanks over 5 gallons. Now I have 3. So 1 29 salt water for Christmas and I think I'm done for a while :( .

Well good luck and if you can Google Neon Tetra's. There are lots of sites that have info. As for me I just treat them like my Guppies. They do eat a bit of shelled pea when I serve them to the tank. Oh and the tend to stick to one corner. I think because they like to be in groups of 6 or more.

Ok I need to go. But good luck with the Neons. They will add a burst of color to the tank.

Before all else fails....do a 25% water change ;)

i have an adult female fish w/ an orange tail she has a black body and she has been that way  scence the day i got her. one of my fry has a black body and is starting to get an orange tail. So it is just a darker-colored strain of guppies.

The Baensch Atlas lists neon tetras as putting up (none / 0) (#5)

with 68-79 degrees F / 20-26 C. However they have their origins in the upper Amazon (as in Peru) and those waters are more likly 68-74 degrees F. Bloodfin tetras, the more robust Buenos Aires tetra and a number of other tetras either from the mountainous areas or pretty far south in South America, are comfortable in what we would call unheated aquaria.

Their cousins, the cardinal tetras are 1,000 miles down stream and do better at 10 degrees F warmer. Keeping Neons and Cardinals is not the best idea, because one or the other may suffer from "temperature discrimination". ;)

Common guppies will take those lower temps, but your 75 F/ 24C is a pretty good compromise and still tolerable, I would hope. for your fancy guppies. If your neons were young when you got them and your water has pretty modest mineral concentrations, you may even find them spawning in clean water, though no eggs are likely to survive in a community tank.

Neons which are raised in hard water are spoiled as spawners. The minerals will "gum up" their reproductive systems, a problem for many other tetras too.

Neons have quite a history in the hobby. Exported first to Germany, a few neon tetras were brought to the U.S. on board the German zepplin Hindenburg (obviously not that last fateful voyage). Aquarium Magazine editor William Innes (for whom they were named) got a look at and photographed them and a couple (I think) found their way to the Shedd Aquarium. They were quite a sensation.

All the best!
