This is just a thought of one way I could help improve my aquarium.

I have the privelage to live in a small South-Eastern NE town, that gets water straight from the Oglalga Aquifor. I know there isnt chlorine in the water, or if there is, not very much. But to be completely sure, is letting water sit in sunlight for a couple of days a way of getting rid of those harsh chemicles?

I would advise you to take samples from the (tap?)water at regular intervals and test it to see what you're dealing with.  That way, you can know what chemicals you need to remove, or do not need to remove.  It's best to play it safe.

as was already mentioned, chlorine will evaporate (i think) when chlorinated water is left to sit, but many chemicals really don't. not only chloramine, but others too. if you could get a water treatment report from your local water treatment plant, you could find out what those extra nasties are. but then, to remove them, you'd have to go out and buy (or order from internet, then pay added shipping costs) expensive water treaters to take out the various things you want out.

there are 2 main things in town/city water that cause aquarists pain, and those are Chlorine and Chloramine. unless you have a really polluted water source, you shouldn't have to worry about anything else. of course, if you DO have a polluted water source, you shouldn't be using that water for anything anyway! so i would just use water conditioner, unless you are having trouble with the water you are using.

if your water IS giving you trouble, and it isn't chlorine or chloramine because you treat for that, i would go get some test kits to test PH and Hardness, Ammonia too. oh, and maybe NitrIte and NitrAte. chances are, it isn't your water treatment plant thats the problem, it's something to do with the hardness, PH, ammonia, etc.

Hey Raider, what's south east NE?

If there is ONLY chlorine in that water then yes, allowing it to stand for a few days will make it safer however, apparently many places also put in chloramine which can't be removed by allowing the water to stand and requires some sort of additive to remove it.

I'm not so up on this stuff as I don't live in a town and therefore don't have access to treated town water.
