Finny just sadly died. Buried him under the maple tree in the back yard where my other two fish were layed to rest. I am now going to leave my tank for about 4 more weeks for the good bacteria to grow. Then get more fish. Is there any way to start or help the good bacteria to grow???? Thanks Buches!!!!!

You CANNOT cycle a tank without some form of ammonia, whether it is from fish or from doing a fishless cycle.

Depends on how long since you had fish in there. If you wait the 4 weeks then you will have to start the cycling all over again. If you wait just days you might get away with it.

I think the best idea for you would be to clean the tank (check IH for the best instructions) then start the fishless cycling with pure ammonia. Make sure you understand exactly what it is all about. If you don't have test kits then you can't do the fishless cycle because you won't know when it is safe to put new fish in there. In that case you will have to use fish to cycle the tank but I can't remember what size tank it is to make a judgement on that. In my opinion a 45 litre tank or larger should handle having just 2 guppies to start with.

Remember that no matter which way you go, only add 2 new fish at a time and wait at least a week between (preferably 4 weeks). That will allow the good bacteria to build up to their new fish load.

Sorry to hear of the demise of Finny. Are there (none / 1) (#1)

any fish at all in the tank?

If there aren't would you please copy Angelhologram's article out of Immediate help, print it up and ask your folks to read it when they have a moment.

Perhaps you can work out a deal with them to get some straight ammonia, test kits (if you don't have them), a gravel vac and whatever else you might need for your tank.

Each family would work something different for themselves, so I surely don't wish to presume. In some families the kids would work around the house for some extra money. In others, it might involve lawn mowing or baby sitting elsewhere. Still others would have other responsibilities and just have to wait for allowance. While that is getting worked out, you, maybe with your folks, can do a fish-less cycling of the tank. Summer vacation may be an easier time for these things. :)

Again everyone's family will work responsibilities out differently. When our kids were about your age, I think my daughter kind of enjoyed working together on her guppy tank, where a pair of golden, red veil-tailed guppies became a whole tank full of gorgeous golden-bodied red-veils. My son had his tank of Fp. gardneri Misaje. He was delighted when a pair of his killies won a trophy in a show, while I got skunked. ;)

All the best!

::CORRECTION:: DON'T ask for "straight" or "pure" ammonia. Ask for pure CLEANING ammonia. I made the mistake and was given a funny look before being asked if I was making a bomb. Apparently PURE ammonia is very different from the cleaning kind and is a component is explosives.
