Since it's been quite a while since my last, gargantuan post ...

I think I forgot to mention that I got some new fish!

We are pretty happy with our little citizens, but in the interest of introducing some new genetic material into the mix, I went ahead and purchased two trios: balloon mollies (BM) and gups of course!

The new ones are:

Balloon:  one orange male, one black female and one BIG white female

Guppies:  One blue male, one kind of irridescent/rainbow-tailed female, one yellow and black-tailed female.

I got them on Sunday, April 30, 2006 from my newly discovered LFS (just opened!).  I've had them in QT since then, although they have been 100% healthy and active.  Yesterday (5/21/06) I moved the white female (BM) and one of the female gups to the main tank.  I am moving them slowly, in pairs, so as to not overload the tank's biological capacity.

Well, about a week after I bought them, the black BM dropped at least 7 fry (I say 'at least' because that's how many I have now!), all of them black!  I love love love the little black fry, they are so adorable ... my wife is smitten as well.  A few days later, one of the females dropped at least one fry, because all's I found was the one :/  That one has now grown to have a bent spine, and probably won't make it.

I also discovered, while doing a partial water change, three new fry in the main tank!  I promptly removed them to the QT tank, since that is where my floating breeding tank is currently (for all the other fry from the new BM).

Fish are doing well, generally.  The plants have really taken off as well!  I think the CO2 system has had quite an impact on them.  And, after a month and two days, the CO2 cansiter (comprised of tap water sugar, yeast and "stabalizer") is still producing CO2!  Incredible -- that's almost a week longer than it said on the package.

So do I. I just found 4 (I think) in my 90 litre with 5 females and 2 males left (and 3 slightly older fry). I'm wondering if they stop eating them once numbers get down? These fry actually hang out underneath the huge silver dollar. I put off doing a water change on the tank for a couple of days to give those fry a chance to get stronger and be more able to hide. I still found one in a bucket of water removed from the tank and put it back. 5 minutes later I saw one get eaten and I still have 4. I've never seen a fry get eaten before and hope I never do again. Man that is sick! I was Just centimetres away from saving it.

Hey no1likeme1414 ! Just after reading your (none / 0) (#3)

comments in response to Peter's water holding and changing system (I share your "plumbing envy") I gathered you were mourning the lack of opportunity to do some of the innovative things with fish and then here you mention the CO-2 generator! LOL!

I've never had the nerve to try one. There are plans on the NET for DIY systems. Your kit sounds like a better idea. Do you like it well enough to name brands and where one might get one? How much trouble was it to set up and run? Does it sit or hang pretty much out of the way?

One of my concerns with the DIY units is they (it is rumored) tend to set messy sometimes.

The lusher plant growth of course is contributing to the increased fry survival you are so pleased with.

I hope when these things get suggested on Guppylog   that readers realize that not everyone is going to be able to get them right away and that is ok. My first bowl were purchased about 1959 with paper route money. I saw photos of people's fishroom, but never guessed that I would someday have one. I'll spare the details, but it was a long time coming and is still evolving. Someday when I grow up, I hope to have half the water processing system Peter has. :)

Looking forward to what your feelings are on your unit. The Aqua Botanic Store http://www.aquabotanic.com/abstore/index.html
has a Hagan reactor, sounding similar to your for $27 and others for as much as $50. But the CO2 injectors with a CO2 tank are beginning in the $200 to $300 range, when everything is included.

A better price for a CO2 unit, but still without the CO2 canister, filled is found at http://www.aquariumpros.com/p-BLCO2,CO.html

I'm sure one could shop around more. But when one looks at the big systems, the yeast fermenters - if they don't jam and make a mess - may be more to scale in terms of one's tank(s) and mad money.

All the best!

wow - uncle scott, if you're still around and somehow read this, I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!  Hey, what's 8 months or so really?  ;)

To answer your Q re: the CO2 generator, it was a very common model from Nutrafin, that uses essentially sugar, water, yeast and something (baking powder?) called a "stabalizer" - if I figure out what that is I will cease buying the little "refill" packets.

Here's a picture

http://www.aquariumguys.com/nutrafinco2.html

It works fairly well - the plants picked up noticably.  Yes, it has a canister and a hanger for the back of the tank - I leave mine on the ground behind the tank.

It's not really messy (I dump mine out in the toilet), but it does smell pretty bad once it's run the cycle, which is between a few weeks and a  month and a half.
