I finally got my guppies! The only thing I don't like about today is that one already died. It was the neatest one too! It was orange and silver. I don't know what happened to him, but I think I may of had too many in there. I had 4 guppies (2 male 2 female) and 1 Chinese Algae Eater (He's still really tiny). I don't think the nitrite could have been the cause becasue he was only in there for maybe 1\2 an hour before he died.

Keep on Keepin on,

In an odd way it's a good thing... (none / 0) (#4)

Just think of it along the lines of at least you have the ideal male to female ratio. Good luck with you new fish/tank(s)

Such a fast death isn't a good sign... keep us updated.

I can imagine your disappointment over losing that one male. In a half an hour it could have been shocked or even suffocated in a number of ways. Check and see if it got injured in the netting process? Does your shop have any kind of guarantee? Do you have to return the body and bring a water sample?

Perhaps double check with

That algae eater, when small, will be a good "working fish" and take hair algae, which other fish will leave alone. On the other hand, a soap-less plastic pot scrubber will get that algae off quickly too. Or turn off the tank light sooner or pull the window shade where the sunlight comes in. :)

Googling Guppylog for Chinese Algae Eaters will get almost 40 hits. Long run, they are very dangerous to have in a tank with guppies. Does your shop have a return policy? There is also a small IH section on Algae and Algae Eaters.

Good luck with your guppy trio. Feed them a couple of times a day, so lightly that the food is gone in a 2-5 minutes. Start seasoning and treating water now, for next week's partial (25-45%) water change. If you have a test kit, that will help you monitor your aquarium over the next six weeks or so, as the nitrogen "eating" bacteria and their colleagues develop the process of breaking the really dangerous toxins down to much less dangerous toxins (hence the partial weekly water changes).

All the best!

Well it didnt get injured while netting because I didnt net it. I was taught to wait 1/2 hour with the bag floating in the water, the untie the bag, hold it sideways and let them swim out on there own.
Right before the death, he was just floating still near the plant. Every now and then he would start to "shiver".

when you say "shiver", do you mean he would sort of swim side to side but not go anywhere? if it is, that's called shimmying. i've found it common with internal bacterail infections. whatever made him do it was in that water, so if you added the water from the bag to your tank,it's in your tank, too. watch the others CLOSELY and be absolutly SURE to keep up with your weekly 25%  water changes. this should help the other's immune systems fight it off. but if they start shimmying, tell us.

I dont know EXACTLY what you mean about the "Shimmying" thing buy he would, (The best I can describe it)shiver exactly like a human. He didnt try to swim.
