I can imagine your disappointment over losing that one male. In a half an hour it could have been shocked or even suffocated in a number of ways. Check and see if it got injured in the netting process? Does your shop have any kind of guarantee? Do you have to return the body and bring a water sample?
Perhaps double check with

That algae eater, when small, will be a good "working fish" and take hair algae, which other fish will leave alone. On the other hand, a soap-less plastic pot scrubber will get that algae off quickly too. Or turn off the tank light sooner or pull the window shade where the sunlight comes in. :)
Googling Guppylog for Chinese Algae Eaters will get almost 40 hits. Long run, they are very dangerous to have in a tank with guppies. Does your shop have a return policy? There is also a small IH section on Algae and Algae Eaters.
Good luck with your guppy trio. Feed them a couple of times a day, so lightly that the food is gone in a 2-5 minutes. Start seasoning and treating water now, for next week's partial (25-45%) water change. If you have a test kit, that will help you monitor your aquarium over the next six weeks or so, as the nitrogen "eating" bacteria and their colleagues develop the process of breaking the really dangerous toxins down to much less dangerous toxins (hence the partial weekly water changes).
All the best!
