She had babies.  But I don't know how well they are.  Some are very small.  Smaller then the first batch.  I have them in the nursey with the 3 week old fry and mama right now because I donlt think she is done.  I need to know if the 3 week old fry will eat or stress the new fry?  Can the 30 min old fry stay in the same tank as the 3 week olds?

I am not for sure how many she has had.  Today was tank cleaning day and I was cleaning out my 10 gal when I look over and saw little eyes looking at me.  I never even got to the fry tank yet.  I am having a hard time seeing them all in the plants and with the left over bloodworms from this morning feeding.  I guess the fry tank will have to wait a day before it gets cleaned.

I HAVE MORE BABIES.
As of right now we have 11 fry and it looks to be more on the way.

< my goal | everything going well now... who knows for how long. >

I have no advice, but I am jealous that you had more babies already.  I am not a patient birthing assistant!  I want more babies NOW!!!

You will get your babies in do time.  I know what you mean by having to wait. When I was waiting for Sassy to diliver the first batch it took for ever.  Now I am running out of room.

Kust give it time.  They will come  :-)

UPDATE 2 (none / 0) (#4)
by J-ME on Wed Apr 05, 2006 at 08:48:11 PM PST

We have 20 fry.  I cleaned the tank and counted them.  I moved the older fry into the tank with the divider up.  Mama and 3 week old on one side the others on the other side.  I don't want the boys picking on mama just yet.  If at all for awhile.  That puts me at 27 fry right now.

I am hopeing that in the next week I will get my 29 gal tank and I will have females in the big tank males in the 10 gal and fry in the 2 gal and then I think I will be good to go.
Happy fish keeping :-)

Sounds good J-ME. One thing I noticed when my fish were breeding like crazy years ago is that adult females who are regularly in with fry seem to lose interest in eating them. Either that or my fish were having like 50 fry a drop but I never saw them chasing fry and they were right beside my pc.

UPDATE (none / 0) (#1)
by J-ME on Wed Apr 05, 2006 at 10:53:01 AM PST

Well she looks like she is about done having the fry.  There are a lot in there.  The bigger ones seem to be just chasing them around more then anything.  Mama is still there but she has not tried to eat any babies YET.  I am keeping an eye on her.

I fixed the tank cleaning problem for now.  I don't want to clean the tank and over sstress the new babies so I just pulled a snail from my bigger tank and dropped him in the fry tank.  He has ate most of the food off the bottem.

My main concern right now is the small water fall filter.  Its a 2 in one so it has the air bubbles and the filter in one.  So I can't shut it off they will not have air.  So I think what my plan is right now is to just turn it on for a few and then turn it off.  I am going to check it for babies (make sure none got sucked up).  It gentle enough that it won't kill them but they will get traped inside.

I don't know how many she had.  I put a floating plant in the fry tank so they have a better place to hide from mama and the bigger siblings.

I will keep everyone informed.
Happy fish keeping :-)

I really couldn't say whether or not the three week old fry will eat the new ones. If the new ones were a reasonable size, strong and healthy I think they would be alright.

Can you put a piece of stocking or some other fine mesh over the intake for your filter?
