Not a good day here.  Sassy looks sick and my 29 gal tank was to be here this morning and the person backed out.

First my Sassy guppy.  Yesterday and most of today she has sat in one part of the tank.  She is up by the top of the water in a corner of the tank.  She is not gasping for air or anything but she hasn't moved.  She is 10 days from her next batch going by the last that were born (March 10th 2006).  I moved her into my fry tank for now becasue my Mollies were picking on her.  I didn't want them to over stress her and she dies or aborts the babies.
After moving her she is just sitting in the water up by the water line in the fry tank (2 gal) and not swiming around.  She ate this morning but really didnt' swim to the food she let it come to her.  I have not gave her the afternoon snack yet.
She looks to have no fungas or any scale problems.  She looks healthy other then she is not swiming around much.
The tank is cleaned once a week and it was about 4 days ago.  I treat the water with Start Right  made by Jungle.  Reduces Stress, removes chlorine and chiloramine, Stimulates natural protective slime coat.
Any ideas would be good.

Tank: I was called last night aobut a 29 gal tank that I have been waiting on and she told me that she was on her way (its about a 6 hour drive) and then she called me many hours later and she still had not left yet.  I didn't hear from her all night and then I called her today becasue last I knew she was leaving and by this morning I had never heard from her.  I was getting a little worried.  Well She lives about 2 hours away and had to pick the tank up form her moms.  So when I called this morning she was sleeping and said that she will bring the tank next week or the week after.  She didn't want to over stress the fish that are in the tank so she went home insted of driving the  2 more hours to me.  She set the tank up last night and does not want to empty the tank to drive it to me until after the fish have clamed down.  So needless to say I was not happy but what am I to do.  I quess I will have to wait another week or 2 before I get my new tank.  Thats if she is going to bring it to me at all.

Sad day here.  Hope you have a good day.

and on the side: you really don't want as many males as females. you want about 2 females per male, 3 is better. each male wants to breed, and having only one female for him to bother and assault is not good for the females, or males, for that matter, because a moody pregnant female can turn around and snap him like a twig if she wants to.

this stress on the females is also unhealthy for fry. said harrassment could cause a female to abort, and will more than likely cause birth defects or dificulties.

  atleast, that's what i've experienced. ;)

I have looked for the testing suppleis in my town for fish tanks and even the pet store here does nothave them, not at walmart or any of the samller stores.  So I don't know that PH of the tank.  Sorry.
Can you use testing strips for water that you would use at like a food place or in your own home?
I know where I can get some of tose but I didn't know if they will work or not.

I moved the female into the fry tank and she had babies about 36 hours later.  I kinda thought that was what was going on.  But now I have her in the tank with the divider and she had one side all to herslf and then I put the 3 week old fry in with her.  They are to big to eat now.  And I think that I am going to move my other female so she can have some down time.

I hoping to have my 29 gal tank this week sometime and I am going to put the females in there and all the males in the 10 gal tank so they all can have some down time.

Thank you
Happy fish keeping :-)

UPDATE (none / 0) (#1)
by J-ME on Tue Apr 04, 2006 at 01:40:20 PM PST

Well I was so sad about the tank thing that I felt I needed to go to the fish store here in town.  Guess what I did?  I bought 3 new guppies.  1 female and 2 males.  So now I have 4 guppies.  2 female and 2 males.
I am not really for sure what type they are.

#1 male--  rounded tail and is bright orange with black outline

#2 male--  looks to be a halfback swordtail or a doubleback swordtail I am pushing halfback,  Many colors red, purple, blue, green, black, pink and orange.

#1 Female (Sassy)-- A blond female with some blue on her tail.  She is pg.  Due April 14-20th 2006

#2 Female--  has not color at all so I am thinking an albino, could be a clear-finned top sword but not 100% for sure.  She is pg and I am not for sure when she is due.  She is still has the yellow eggs.  So I am going to say maybe 2 weeks.  Guesstment due date would be April 25 to the first of May.

The lady at my pet store does not know much about guppie so there was not much she could me.  If you want my opp. I don't think she really likes working there.

I am still looking them up on the net so if I find anything else I will post it.  But what I have typed is the closest that I have come so far.

Any Sujestions would be helpful.
Thank you
Sorry I don't spell the best but I try...

Happy fish keeping :-)

Yep, Sassey would have golden body if blond. :) (none / 0) (#8)

To clarify for others J-ME, when you say your are cleaning the tank every week, you are just doing a little gravel vacuuming and changing maybe 20-45% of the water, which was conditioned and sat a couple of days to a week?

That question is mostly for the benefit of visiting newbies who might clean the whole tank, thereby never establishing the nitrogen cycle, which can take up to a couple of months to establish.

Thanks. Sassy probably just needs space of her own. She may need O2, so don't over-feed. That 2-gal is pretty small for one female without any fry. Hope that 29 gets there soon.

Will you be able to spare some gravel and water from a healthy tank for the 29? There is no rule which says that a new tank must be full at the get go. You could put a couple more gallons in, from time to time, (but less than half of the water) after the gallons "season".

Also, could you pick up a box or sponge filter and (for now) run it in a healthy tank? You can then place it in the 29 when that arrives and it will already be at least partially "seeded" with the useful bacteria.

All the best!

I only vac the rocks and pull out about 20%-25% of the water. And take the plants out and rinse them off. I have only done a full tank cleaning once and that was when my tank got TB in it.  I was new to this and didn't know how evereything should be done then now I do.

When the 29 gal tank gets here it will be 25% full of the org. water.  I told them not to dump it all out.  And I was going to use 25% of the 10 gal tanks water.  I hope thats ok.

I will look into the sponge filter.  I don't know if walmart here has them or if even my pet store does.  I  might have to order it.

Thank you UNC for all the help.
Happy fish keeping :-)
