I got fry! Yay!

Today I got home from school and was making the rounds, checking on my fish (this can take a while, I have 10 tanks) when I saw a pair of tiny little eyes staring at me.

I wasn't expecting any fry so soon, so my fry tank wasn't ready yet. I grabbed my empty 1 gallon tank out of the top of my closent, and filled it with water from my guppy tank, and started fishing around for fry.

They are sneaky little things! Much harder to catch than I imagined. I managed to catch 13 of the little boogers. I may try to find more later.

Right now I'm cleaning out a 5 gallon tank I found in my garage, and the fry will move into it once it is ready. Hopefully by the end of the week.

congrats, but don't you think the 5 gal should cycle for longer than a week? for fry, i would try 2 or 3. they should be fine in the 1 gal, if you do your water changes.

I'm going to use water from my healthy cycled tanks. :)

Once you have as many tanks as me, waiting for them to cycle isn't really an issue, just wait for a water change and use that. :)

Also fry are so tiny to start with that there isn't much Ammonia produced from them. Each day their output will increase slowly and cause the corresponding bacteria numbers to increase with them. I find fry the perfect answer to cycling but I still do water changes and testing.

That is a great question though. (none / 0) (#8)

One can cover their bets on the new tank by also adding gravel (lifted in a net so all the mulm doesn't come with), plants and even a filter from an established tank. Plunking a few pond snails in for "left-over patrol" is not a bad thing either. :)

I put a snail, and a couple plants from their tank in it.
I only have one snail for now, or I would have added more.

I did some more searching, and I'm up to 28 fry.

They are moving into the 5 gallon tank tomorrow :)

Counting them isn't easy though, hey?

I counted them as I put them in their tank, otherwise I probably couldn't have done it.
