info, info, info. (none / 0) (#5)

as it was said before, we will need more info to help.

what size tank do you have/plan to get?

do you plant to get a heater?

do you plant to get a filter?

  do you want to breed?

do you understand what "cycling" a tank is?

if you want to breed, do you know what you would do with the babies once they grew? even if you got just one female that you didn't think was pregnant, if she was kept with males, she is. guppies also store sperm for up to 6 months, one batch each month. say she is a small fish and has 10 on the first drop. each drop they have 50% more than the last drop. so #1 would be 10 babies, 2 would be 15, 3 would be 22, 4 would be 33, 5 would be about 50, 5 would be about 75!!! the number varies for each female, and there is only a certain number that each female can hold at a time, but if that chart were exactly correct for the individual you bought, the total would be...over 200 fry!! lets say that, for each batch, 2 fry die. we are still talking around 200. it is common to sell the fish as adults to the fish or pet store, but that may not be an option for everybody. so one has to really think if they want to breed or not.

do you have any tanks/fish already??

would you have an all guppy tank, or would you mix other fish in?

what type of fish would you put in, then?

are you interested in showing guppies?

please be sure to answer all of the questions.

a few questions...... (none / 0) (#1)

In order to even give you a rough number, there are a few things people need to know.
how big is your tank? 10 gallons I think?
do you have any other fish?
And seeing as guppies will have anywhere from 1-100+ babies at a time, no matter how many you have in the tank to start, within a very short time, if you have females, those numbers will at least double.
You may also want to read back through the responses to other posts you have made. This question has been answered for you before.

Good luck!

You could have more, but a trio or pair (none / 0) (#2)

is what some serious breeders start out with. Then there is space for fry to grow. One can focus their attention on feeding and changing water for those fry too. You may have a really great batch of faster growing youngsters that way.

I'm likely to get more serious about shopping for a certain strain of guppy now that the weather is nicer. (Got a small package of one of my fish going out to Detroit tomorrow.) I will be looking for either two pairs or a trio those sought after guppies. :)

All the best!

As every one is probably sick of hearing round here (from me), a tank of all males is rather nice especially since you don't have to worry about what to do with the fry.

If your tank is 10 US gallons then 8-10 males would look great providing you were religious with the weekly water changes and changed about 1/3 of the water.

OH yeah an all male tank is a blast. Mine are side by side. 2 10 (40L) gallons. One male one female and fry. The males are always showing off. Even my finger in the tank "excites" them.
One thing you could do is just get 1 fish. Look for an extremely pregnant female. If possible. The cheepest way to get a tank of fish. The fattest one in the bunch.
Welcome to guppies. I haven't been into them long myself. But take the advice of some of these others seriously. They helped me keep mine from all dying of something or other.
Before all else fails....do a 25% water change ;)
