Get ready this is going to be a long one.

Sorry its been awhile.  I had to chnge internet providers and it was about 2 weeks from the time that the first one shut me off until the next could get me up and running.  But I am now good to go.

Fish are good.  I got the 29 gal tank about 10 days ago.  The only problem with that is I got all the fish inside the tank too.  There are over 100 females and 100 males.  I have the females in one tank and the males in the other.  And I just had one that had babies about 5 days ago.  I have fish everywhere.  I am trying to get rid of some of them.  I didn't know that their were that many.

Not only was there more fish then there should have been but they also didn't take care of the tank.  There was so much rotten food in the bottem of the tank that when we moved it, it turned that water dark green.  So green that you could not see through the water.  There was so many snails.... well over 300.  That was fun....

I went on ahead and set the tank up in my living room.  I didn't try to get all the gross food out of it I thought that we have just moved them 200 miles that I would let them have some rest.  Thinking the filter would clean the most part out and bring the water back to clear.  Yeah that worked like nothing was there.  I left it ike that until the next day and I was worried that they could not breath.  So I used a vac to clean the rocks but they were so bad that it just made the tank water green again.  But this time I have pulled over 100 snails out and there was still way to many to count.

As I stared to clean the rocks and the water was turning green I did the olny thing I could think of.  I was scared that I was going to start losing the fish so I caught them all and put them in a pot.  That was all I had big enough.

Now what I am going to tell you next is going to give some of you a heartattck but it was the only thing that I could think of.  I emptyed the tank all together.  Took all the water out and then dumped all the rocks out.  Went to the store and got all new stuff for the tank.  Needless to say I now have no more snails.

I took water out of my 10 gal tank to start a fill up on the 29 gal tank.  Then started to fill it up the rest of the way.  Put the fish back in, a new fitler in (just the filter itself not a new system), put in the addative and some salt (just enough for a 10 gal tank we didn't want to kill them) now we are good to go....  so I thought....

2 days after all this has been done the tank was so cloudy that you could not see through it.  This puts us on Easter.  My livingroom smelled like amiona ( I know thats spelled wrong sorry) or cat pee.  Now I have cats but I am very clean so I know thats not what it was. BUT just in case I steam cleaned all my floors.  Well I was right after that I could still smell it.  I go over to the tank and sniffed with the lid off.  MY GOODNESS it was so gross smelling.  So I changed the filter but I wanted to make sure,  I took the the whole filter system and cleaned it out with pinesol.  Then rinsed it VERY well.  Put it all back together and a few hours later still nothing.  So I took the tube part off the fitlter system and sniffed it.  Yeah that was stupid of me.  So I got a pipe cleaner and ran it through with really hot water.  It was sooooo gross in there I can't believe that it ran at all.  I am sure that there were dead fish in there that who knows how long were there.  After that  I put it all back together and yet again a new filter.  Also just to be on the safe side I took over half the water out and filled it back up with clean water.  Yes all this is uncycycled water but I could think of nothing else to do.  I treated the water and put in some more salt ( no more then for a 10 gal tank).  We are now doing good.  The water still smells but not half as bad.  I don't know what else to do to it.  I am sure that I have over stressed them enough.

It has not been 5 days and I have not done anything to the tank.  And with all that we did to the tank we only lost 2 fish.  One to the fitler and one got stuck in the net and I didn't know.  By the time I saw him it was to late.  So far so good.

In a few more days will clean the rocks but I will only take out about 1/8th of the water.

Also in the 29 gal tank with all the boys is a hugh algey eater (he is aobut 4 1/2 in long) and a funny looking cat fish thing.  I have no clue what  kind of cat fish it is.

Females are in a 10 gal tank ( i know thats not good but I have no place else to put them and I don't wnat them with the males I already have to many and heaven knows how many more on the way).  I am working on getting rid of most of them.  I have a few people that want some but they don't have a tank and I want them to cycle the tank first.  One of the people that want them use to breed guppies about 15 years ago and would like to get back into it.  I talk to my little girls school and they said they would call me if they heard anything.  I am also going to call my pet store and see if she will take any.  Right now I will even give them to her for free if she will just tank them.

Well thats where I am at right now.  Any suguestions would help.

Thank you for taing the time to read all that I have wrote.

All guppies.  Most have bight red tails.  Very pretty well I guess they would be handsome.  :-)  About 30 of them have very uellow tails.  I have not had time to look up what kind of guppy they all are but they are very pretty and lots of color.  Some have the sword tails and some even have the sword tails that have 2-3 swords on them.  Sorry thats the only way that I can discribe it.  And there are a few that have HUGE dorsal fins, they kinda look like pony tails.  I wish I could take a picture of them but my carmrea does not do well with tank pictures.

Well I am glad that you think I handled it well because I had no idea what to do.  And my net was sown so I could not ask for help.  Right now I am looking for someplace online that I can get a testing kit because in this town that I live in you can not get them anywhere.  It sucks.

thank you
Happy fish keeping :-)

yes, i have to go a long way to get to any pet store at all. its 25 miles to the nearest pet store, which is, i have to say this, complete crap. they get their dogs from puppy mills and the birds always get into fights because they are overcrowded. the hamsters go into labor in the store, atleast one a day. the fish tanks are filthy. there is atleast one dead fish in every tank. it's disgusting. not to mention, everything there is about twice the amount of $ that it should be.

petsmart is about an hour away, and its also an hour to the one good FISH store i know/trust. that's where my mollies go when they are old enough.

wow that sounds like the pet store here in my town.  I hate going in there.  The whole place smells and the tanks are green in color because they do not take care of them at all.  And its more of a fish store and pet supply store.  All they really have is fish, a few birds that have been there for as long as I have been going in the store, one really mean cat, and every now and then a bunny.  I hate it but I live over 200 miles from a pet smart or anything like that.  I am hoping to get there here in  the next month but I don't know yet.

I should have included a miles and kilometres conversion on that page. I think DJIsaac might be a lot further though?

It Sounds like you have great difficulty in getting rid of your fish, my local fish store will snatch mine off my hands and so will my neighbors.

I'm sorry I cant help you with the fish, I'm in England ;/. And if you have a fish shop that really cares about their fish being shipped half way around the world, they will take them instantly ;].

Man it was gross.  I could not believe that none of the fish died.  And it smelled so bad but I am working on it and its getting better.  I am looking for a new filter right now too.  I don't know how old the other one is and I don't like the type that it is.  Its one of the outside hanging ones and I like the ones that hang in the water.

Thank you
Happy fish keeping :-)

I can not find a amoina testing kit in this town.  But I will keep cleaning the tank aobut every 3 to 4 days for now.  I did not know that you can a an amonia spike like that.  Wow thank you for the info.  I am really working on getting rid of as many fish as I can.  I really didn't want them all but I really wanted the tank and that is why I took them all.

Thank you and I will start looking online for a testing kit.
Happy fish keeping :-)

J-ME are you testing your tank for ammonia and nitrites? You really need to as you will mabye get a huge ammonia spike with that number of fish and much of the good bacteria gone. The filter may still be holding some.

I would recommend frequent water changes and testing. If you go slow and steady the fish will get used to it within a day or two. Changing 1/8 of the water will not be enough to dilute the ammonia. You really need an ammonia test kit at the very least.

You will always have to do frequent water changes with that many fish, every 3-4 days.
