5 more days until my molly, Elizabeth, is due. i can't beleive i've gotten this far.

i was sure i would lose her, at one point, anyway. in a month or so i'm going to get a 5 gal for either my room, or this room, the computer room. it will be Barnabe's Bachelor Pad. the he can leave Elizabeth alone, and she can have her own 10gal nursery. until the fry are segragated by gender and the young females move in, that is. it will be nice to know that Barnabe will be able to have his own space, while Elizabeth can relax and enjoy motherhood.

ok, NEW chart. (none / 0) (#7)
by Nancy4Fishes on Mon Apr 17, 2006 at 12:35:11 PM PST

you won't find much different in this chart, except the younger fry are in the 5 gal, when they produse less waste. of course, the older males will also be in there. oh well. only so much space, you know?

Batch #1: stays in net breeder in 10 gal until 1 week old, then move into school's 5 gal.

Batch #2: stays in net breeder in (new) 5 gal where male lives, until #3.

Batch #3: #2 moves into female 10 gal tank, open water. #3 goes into 5 gal net breeder, until next batch.

Batch #4: #2 males move into fraternal 5 gal. Females stay where they are. #3 move into maternal 10gal. #4 move into fraternal net breeder.

Batch #5: #2 stay where they are, until sold to LFS. #3 segregated by gender, like #2 was. #4 move into maternal 10 gal. #5 move into fraternal net breeder, with father and older males.

*Batch #6 should be last batch from current insemination*

Batch #6: #2 out of house and in with new owners. #3 stay in current place, until sold to LFS. #4 segregated by gender, like previous batches. #5 move into open water maternal 10gal. #6 move into the net breeder in 5gal.

concerning the chart, (none / 0) (#6)

do you think the chart stresses the male 5 gal too much?

i was thinking, maybe the newest batch should be in the net breeder with dad, so that the older fry stay with the mother? i'll have to revise the chart and see if it looks more reasonable.

yeah, i guess she does come in handy for SOMETHING ;).

but yeah, i'm getting pretty excited. i don't know how the 2 will react after separation, but, as UC has said in some other post i've read, "nature will find a way.".

he is the one who inseminated before, and the two are currently my only two fish. i know a trio is about tenfold better than a pair, but my older female died a few months ago, and i don't currently have a QT. i'll probably get another female in the mid summer, when being shipped to the store isn't so hard on them. i live in a very cool place, so mid summer is actually about 75 degrees, 80 in any fish dealer within 100 miles. it all depends on mother nature, anyhow.

i may also just take a female or two from the last batch, as i posted before. if i do that, i'll retire elizabeth from breeding.

ok, here is that chart. (none / 0) (#2)

i call it a seating chart but it is really a rotation chart. be careful, it gets confusing fast. i had to read it several times to make sure it all actually made sense...

batch #1: stays in net breeder in 10 gal that the mother lives in until 1 week old, then moved to the school's empty 5 gal.

batch #2: kept in net breeder in 10 gal with
mother until next batch(age 1 month).

batch #3: batch 2 moved to 5 gal with dad, #3 put into net breeder in 10 gal until NEXT batch.

batch #4: batch 2 females moved to 10 gal tank with mother, males stay with dad. #3 move in with
dad as well. #4 in net breeder like previous batches, until #5.

#5: batch 2 stays where they are, until sold to LFS. #3 females move with mom, males stay with dad. #4 moves in with dad and other males. #5 moves into net breeder in the female 10 gal.

*number 6 should be last batch from insemination*

#6: #2 should be out of house and in with new owners. #3 stays where they are until sold to LFS. #4 separated by gender. #5 moves in with dad. #6 goes into net breeder.

yes, it is confusing. i told you. the LFS i am talking about is an hour away, but the tanks are great, each tank is on a seperate system than the others, and there is very little overcrowding. each month the next batch will move out. i may keep a few females from #6 for breeding. if  i can tell gender earlier than said times, i will segragate then. if a #7 shows up, the pattern of the chart will stay the same. the first batch will only be about 8 babies at most, the female is small and this is her first time dropping. i think that is it.

and, on the plus side, i've worked out where my male will stay while my female is "doing her thing".

i know you are thinking, "what? the male should be fine in there with her.", but my fish are a little bit...different. since they are the only 2 in the 10 gal, they have grown a little attached to each other. i was reading over a post today with all of the birthing signs on it, and on that list was "begins to drift away from the others and hides in plants.".

that's when it hit me. if the male never leaves her side, the way he always does, how can she be alone? whenever he doesn't know where she is, he'll swim around like a deranged monkey until he finds her.

SOOO... i've talked to my partner in crime, guppies5, and she's agreed to take him in her tank for a few days, until my female drops. once she drops, the babies will go in the net breeder and the male can move back in. hopefully, by this time next month, i will have my 5 gal up and running, and he can move there, permanently. he won't be alone for long. i posted my seating chart on a different diary of mine, i can post it here, too.

That is neat, having someone nearby enough (none / 0) (#3)
by unclescott on Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 06:32:22 PM PST

to be able to baby-sit or board the odd fish. I had an affectionate pair of more robust fish where they were eventually separated because they didn't continue to bond so well. And separation may or may not make the heart grow fonder.

If you want that male to inseminate that female, you may want to get her back within two days of dropping. On the other hand, you have a lot of guppies now and that may not be a priority. You may want to focus on raising what you have.

Having a fish-head buddy nearby has all sorts of pluses. Borrowing "stuff" and babysitting are not among the least of them. The best is having someone to compare notes with, to celebrate with and to commiserate with. Also, everytime someone stops by my place, they may get an idea they can use with their fish. However they may also ask, "How come you do such and such?" If I haven't a good answer, I will grown as an aquarist and eventually seek to fix the problem.

It is one of those funny "can't see the trees for the forest" things. Someone else walks in "cold turkey" and sees a mistake or something which could be find-tuned in a heart beat. :)

All the best!

*smiles wryly* My fish-keeping friends are staunch Walmart shoppers, and believe the height of betta housing is those six-inch by three-inch DUPLEX holders.  I wouldn't trust them with my fish further than I could throw them.  All my time is taken up with lecturing on the way they take care of their animals.

I'd kill to be friends with an intelligent fishophile who lived in my area, though.  *wistful sigh*
