More and more, I get email like this from Earthlink, and it's really annoying me. Read more below.

I apologize for this automatic reply to your email.

have approved beforehand.

If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please
fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you,
I will receive your original message in my inbox. You do not need to
resend your message. I apologize for this one-time inconvenience.

Now, I'm all for people at Earthlink using Guppylog. What I do not want, is someone signing up for an account here, and not getting their confirmation email because of Earthlink's retarded anti-spam policy. My solution is likely going to be to block them from account creation. This means Earthlink users will have to get a second email account somewhere if they want to sign up at Guppylog. I hate to do it, but it's just plain rude to sign up somewhere, and not whitelist them so they can send you a confirmatory email. Earthlink knows this, and should inform their customers of it. I don't think this is the Earthlink customers fault, but since that's the service they chose, I do think it's still their responsibility.

Frankly, this to me is spam. It's not my responsibility to maintain Earthlink's whitelist for them. It's theirs.

Thoughts?

Exactly. Everyone should have a free account they use for signing up to stuff anyway.

I have had similar problems with friends and acquaintances who use Earthlink -- I've received that exact message several times. I second the idea of having an "Attention Earthlink customers" item on the registration page; give it a test run for a few weeks and see how many people abide by it. You might even mention in that paragraph that the penalty for enough people not complying is that they'll have to get a Yahoo! address if they want to register. ;) Good luck and thanks for the hard work! I love this board! -Mark

Ha! (none / 0) (#7)
by Scott Lockwood on Thu Apr 13, 2006 at 09:26:17 PM PST

Not to be snarky, but most people here can't even read the F.A.Q. or the Immediate Help section before posting, so why should I think they'll read the fine print during account creation?

:))

They're getting better though Scott. Some of the newbies have made it very obvious they have bothered to read stuff. It would be a shame to lose those.

Ok - can you find the template or whatever in the system, and add something like:

If you use Earthlink, and you have the spamblocking turned on, please whitelist scott@guppylog.com, or you will not get your confirmation message, and thus will not be able to use the site.

In bold, and perhaps even blinking. :-)

I think I've achieved what you have asked. I assume I would have to log out to be able to check the page though?

I've left the blinking out for the moment. I have a friend with Meniere's disease and know what it can do to some people.

I didn't realize you already had a message on that page for people "Do NOT enter a spam-protected or fake email address." That should have been enough but you never know, maybe the mention of Earthlink might ring bells and stand out to them ;)

Where is this notice miskairal? (none / 1) (#12)
by unclescott on Sat Apr 15, 2006 at 10:43:29 AM PST

I would bet serious money that many Earthlink subscribers have no idea what that whitelisting thing is doing to them.

I recall subscribing to a fish list out of Oz, as a Net newbie about ten years ago. I was shocked to get ferociously flamed by a list administrator who had gotten spam from a prodigy.net address and assumed that was what it was all about. I would have been banned from the list if some other parties hadn't noted that Prodigy (as opposed to Prodigal) was an ISP, not just a source for spam.

There never was an apology, except that I was allowed to stay on the mailing list. (Hope the administrator got his rabies shot in time.) I stayed because of the graciousness of others, their wit and insights into rainbowfish.

Don't assume that a new member is an experienced and scarred Net veteran. I have my own questions about the provider in question, but learned not to  judge a customer by the ISP.

All the best!

by Scott Lockwood on Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 05:05:27 PM PST

I think I made it pretty clear that I wasn't blaming the user. I think I also made it pretty clear that I'm placing 110% of the responsibility with Earthlink.

I'm all for helping new people get on, but I'm quite busy, working like 50+ hours a week, plus taking care of my own fish, and family.

Perhaps I should make the 'respond to' address something like 'help@guppylog.com' and then set that up as a redirect to a short group of people willing to help with such things.

Any one willing to volunteer? :-)

I'm not sure this is one of my most sensible things to do but yes, I stick my hand up as a volunteer. lomelindi might like to take this on as she's asking for work :)

So we need short volunteers? :) (none / 0) (#14)
by unclescott on Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 07:24:30 PM PST

But enough small talk. ;)

I'll help some if people have questions on where to post whatever. Be prepared for a predisposition to recommend diaries. My time is also limited, but not as much as it is for most of you.

In turn, would you Scott or Miskairal, find that section (which probably made sense before we began tweaking the instructions) that says don't post about guppies in the diaries and change or delete that?

Here it is in the 3rd paragraph of the "F.A.Q.
For Newbies!"

"Use it (the diary) for non guppy things or for short items."

That may be mostly why all those short guppy questions are submitted as logs! (And then we pounce on those folks for trying to follow those instructions and posting short guppy questions as logs.)

I remember reading that a couple of months ago and being mickle confused. Others have given testimony  to that too. It needs to be changed to something along the line of,

"Most one or two paragraph questions on guppies are best placed in the diaries."

"Diaries can also be used for observations upon other aspects of the aquarium hobby and non-guppy things."

Thanks!
unc

"Most one or two paragraph questions on guppies are best placed in the diaries."

Done!

"Diaries can also be used for observations upon other aspects of the aquarium hobby and non-guppy things."

I think what's there makes the same point
" Diary entries do not have to be guppy related and in fact do not even have to be fish related. There is no voting on this."

by Scott Lockwood on Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 07:41:59 PM PST

More importantly, that's not a hard and fast rule - that's a guideline, or a suggestion. It's mostly there to let people know that the diary section is kind of a free speech zone, where they can bitch about their college english professor if they want to - do what you want, it's your diary. It's not meant to be restrictive...

So it would have been a good place to tell everyone that last Saturday I turned 30 and sorry if it has made me a little grumpy lately?

Maybe add something to the sign up form informing people of this problem and request that they use another free e-mail service such as yahoo, hotmail, or gmail? Give people who have already signed up a chance to change their info first though.

Give people who have already signed up a chance to change their info first though.

Not necessary. It won't stop someone who has already created an account with an earthlink email address from accessing their account - they already have one. It would just stop people from creating new accounts with an earthlink address.

I agree with angel. Try a warning first on the sign up page and see if they bother to read it. If not, then block earthlink, again with a warning message on the sign up page.

I agree with everyone too. My Hubby's boss has Earthlink and the first time we sent an e-mail to them from a new address it bounced back like that to.
