eight days ago i saw my two guppies breeding. i know they are breeding because i looked it up on google images, but does this mean she is DEFINITLY pregnant?

the male left her alone after about 3 days, but before then, he was on a serious frenzy (ooer). by day 2 my female had had it with him. is she, without a doubt, pregant? she was a virgin before i put her in my general guppy tank.

i'm sorry, miskairal. i guess my anticipation is just getting the best of me. i know you couldn't tell over the internet, i was just wondering if any of the GL users had some, i don't know, secret ways to tell or...something...sorry.

We wish. If we could diagnose fish pregnancy we'd be millionaires and then I could have even more tanks :)

Like any animal I doubt it is possible to say. I would go with yes but there is always a possiblilty that she is unable to have fry.

I'm going to go with....yes.  I think when the females start shunning the males they are already 'knocked up'.

so the first two days after dropping. 99.99% of the time she is. That doesn't mean the males will not still try 24/7. That's what a hormone attack is all about. ;)

All the best!

she was a virgin before this. i separated male-female once the gonopodiums started popping up...there was no other birth to be fertilized after.

" once the gonopodiums started popping up" is too late in my opinion. They need to be separated before the gonopodium develops to be 100% safe.

ok, but she is six months old and has never dropped before, so even if a few of her sisters became pregnant, i don't think she was. she had 4 sisters and 2 brothers that survived to adulthood. i still have one of her brothers and her. the others went to the LFS.

so, with that said, back to my original question. IS she pregnant? i of course know she could be sterile, but there is very little imbreeding in her blood, so i sort of doubt it.

Nancy we don't know!!

You can tell a dog is pregnant only a week or two before she gives birth IF she is going to have more than one pup. I've known breeders who haven't been sure until the dog goes into labour.

You can tell a human is pregnant by using a pregnancy test or examination by a doctor.

You can tell a goat is pregnant by looking for swelling under the tail or again, wait until she is in labour.

You can tell a cow is pregnant by sticking your arm up it's butt.

Why would we, over the internet, be able to tell if your fish is pregnant? There are even humans out there who have given birth without knowing they were pregnant. C'mon.
