i've heard of people slitting open dead pregnant livebearers and saving the fry. how does this work? DOES it work? at what age (into pregnancy) would fry be saveable?

I would think a fish would have to be on the verge of delivering in order for it to work.  With only a four week gestational period they must develop very quickly and even a week would make a huge difference.
Unless these are show fish  I wouldn't think it would be worth the stress and trauma (to me, not the dead fish).

yeah, i mean, it DOES sound pretty gross, but i always feel so bad when the pregnant ones die. i mean, IF they die. like, old ones or something. i just heard about doing this and wondred if anyone could shed some light for me.

They're always pregnant :)
They're almost pregnant again before they give birth unless they've had no fella around for 6 months.
