My betta died after three years of faithful service.  I remembered when I bought his little one gallon aquarium that the box stated it was appropriate for guppies, bettas and goldfish so I decided to get a couple of guppies to replace him.

I remember the fish shop guy asking me which two guppies I wanted from an immense tank of tiny, colorful fish.  Not wanting to be much bother, I said I would take whichever two swam into the net first.  He showed them to me and told me that with a male/female, I would probably end up with babies sooner or later.  The three little girls I had with me thought that was pretty cool, so off we went with our happy fishy couple.

Literally twenty minutes after putting them into my tank I saw a flash of something in the plants.  I remember saying "Girls, you're not going to believe this but the fish had babies already."  After a quick internet search and a call to the fish store we were rushing to Wal Mart to buy another tank.  Three little girls dashing through the store screaming "Save the babies!!!" must have seemed peculiar to some.

I scooped mom and dad out (it seemed easier than catching those tiny fry hiding on the plant leaves) and watched and waited.  Shockingly, they have all survived and appear to be thriving.   I marvel daily at how fast they are growing and try to imagine what colors the males will be.  My male is black with a glorious baby blue tail with black trim, but I suspect he did not father this 'surprise' litter of fry, since both he and mom came from a tank with about thirty guppies in it.

I find myself roaming the house looking for places to put more and bigger tanks, since of course the babies will have to be sexed and separated fairly soon.  And then if I get another litter they will need a nursery, and on and on and on.  I hard boiled an egg and was mashing it with water when my husband caught me.  What was I doing?  Feeding the babies of course.  He finds me at odd hours Googling key words like 'guppy care', 'raising guppies', and 'fancy guppy types'.

I work at home and am constantly sneaking into the living room to admire my little family, side by side in one gallon tanks, just waiting for the weekend when I go to the store and get them some larger homes.  My piano bench has been retired and will be a cabinet for aquariums as money allows.

From ten dollars worth of fish in just a few short days I have discovered a joy and fascination I never thought something as tiny as a fish could offer.  Thank you for allowing me a place to voice my thoughts and feelings.

Wow we sound one in the same.  I am a at home mom with kids that run the house :-)  I got a amle and female guppy and 2 weeks later I was watching my female have her fry.  So here I am on the computer looking up breeding guppies and guppy fry and all that stuff.  My hubby thought I was going nuts.  And I do the egg yolk feeding to0. I was feeding them the egg yolks twice a day but now I am down to one because my fry are getting bigger and don't need to eat as much.
I am now waiting on my next fry around the 14-17th of April...
Good luck to you and your fry
J-ME
Happy fish keeping :-)

We had goten a 1 gallon for our 3 yr old daughter. In 3 days we had a 10 gallon and 8 fish. The 1 gallon housed 10 babies. They are now in the 10 gallon with the males and 2 of the females are in the 1 gallon awaiting more fry. I have almopst talked my husband onto a 29 gallon for mother's day. My husband tells me I love my fish more than the people in the house. I just tell him the people can take care of themselves and the fish can't ;) Have fun with the fishies.

I am waiting on my 55 gal tank that my hubby and I are getting.  I have fry and more on the way...  What fun.  My hubby thinks that I am nuts because I can sit and stare at my fish and I take some much time to care for them.  I had fish growing up but I never really looked at them.  my kids got some fish and now I am hooked.
All the best

Hahaha. So true. Take a look here though

(not dialup friendly but I persevered - I don't even know if they are fresh or saltwater fish)

Shanny you're doomed! Glad to have you on board. I learnt that fish keeping is never as easy as it looks but you are off to a rip roaring start and I hope it continues smooth sailing for you and your daughters.

Holy Cow!  Now *that's* an aquarium!

I would be tempted to swim in that thing!  A whole new definition of "dual use."

Yeah, I agree ... I can't imagine why one would stock such scary looking fish.

I'd fill a 50,000 gallon tank with guppies. :)

Yeah, the fish are UGLY. But a fish tank that big full of livebearers...I'd NEVER get anything done! lol

At my small LPS, there is an aquarium of about 750-800 gallons for like $7k or $8k. I want it!!:) I told my husband maybe I can get it after my daughter moves out (she's only 4, so a LONG time)...but it'd cost a fortune to supply. But soooo pretty....:):)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (this coming from a woman who likes vultures .... mostly because I appreciate their place in the bigger picture but some I find beautiful in their own way)

Should have said I'd never get anything done because I'd never leave the tank, watching for the thousands of babies in it.:)

My first thought was "I wonder how long it took to cycle?"

I thought that was really cool in a completely obsessive kind of way until I saw the fish!  It's like having monsters living in your basement.

I told my hubby that's what I would like. He told me he'd leave if I got that into it. But I have him talked into at least 1 more 10 gallon ASAP. Babies keep popping up all over the one I have. I think all 3 of my females have or are planning on having fry tonight. Hubby says it has to stop. SO that means more tanks for seperating the sexes.:)

It's amazing how we can find excuses. My latest was when I saw a second hand saltwater setup for $400 complete with corals, live rock and lighting. There are 4 metal halide bulbs with it. I would have to pay about $400 to replace my bulbs over the next 18 months so.... why not buy the whole tank and then I could set you up the seahorse tank you want (I don't need that kind of lighting for that). That did the trick. I now have a 4 foot saltwater tank setup containing 2 hermit crabs and another crab and some live and dead rock. It's still fun though - I hand fed the crabs this morning which was a novelty. The corals and lighting has and will be used on my main saltwater tank. I now have 2 freshwater tanks, 2 saltwater and 2 spares. I never thought I'd have spare fish tanks!

Spares are like unstable elements. They only (none / 0) (#12)
by unclescott on Thu Mar 23, 2006 at 02:46:10 PM PST

have that quality for a limited time.

In the killie hobby, there is a tiny militant wing which thinks that they should accumulate a 100 plus, often interchangable tanks. To a person, anyone who expands that fast within a year, is out of the hobby the next year. :(

One guy, many years ago in the Chicago area, had a basement full of tanks. His wife finally delivered the ultimatum, "Either the fish go or I go!"

Supposedly he opined that he sure was going to miss her.

But he was gone from the hobby not too long after the divorce.

Having kidded about that though (in a cautionary sense), there is a point at which the aquarist is not longer keeping fish, they are keeping him or her.

Figure out (considering space, finances, other responsibilities and passions, time...) what you think you can keep. Then go with half of that.

And if you do, you are certainly a more capable person then I am. ;)

All the best!

The only way that I seem to be able to keep myself in check is that I'm not breeding for show and I'm not breeding selective strains. As of now all of my fish are petstore fish and I may pick a pair that I want to mate but after they last time and the 120 fry drop I'm a little afraid of being to picky! I enjoy seeing the different fish that come out of different combinations but if they don't work out exactly the way I want thats ok too. Of course when I get endlers they will have that distinction as well as their own tank.

A friend told me yesterday that there is a new petshop in Kingaroy, just 45 minutes away. That might make a big difference to how many spare tanks I have. If I lived near a petshop I'd have given up by now and just bought the whole shop :)

In reality I was sitting on those tanks waiting for the day that all my guppies died out and hopefully whatever disease they've got with it and then I was going to start again. That's not going to happen anytime soon now as I rescued another 10 fry this morning. I must get tough and resegregate properly.
