Well,
I'm new to this.

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I couldn't find anything.
Maybe I haven't searched well enough.

Anyways,
I'm a novice, I suppose, and am curious...

I'm not sure if one of my male guppies has fin rot or has just been pestered by other guppies or perhaps the mollies in my tank.
He's had the condition for a while,
but still I'm not sure how to handle it.

Are there any distinct signs of fin rot versus fin-nipped tails?

I'd like to treat this however I may.

Please help.
Thank you very much.

Along with these 2 expect opinions, if nothing else fails you might want to pick up some aquarium salt (NOT TABLE SALT) and add it to the tank.  That may help as well.  I have had mollies and guppies together and they pretty much play together but then again if the water conditions are not halfway decent, that may cause some tempers to flair.

Good Luck!
Maggie

Haha, thank you very much. I keep about a tablespoon-full in there after water changes and the like, but it still seems like sometimes it gets cloudy for no reason. Anyway, thank you for the suggestion.

Hi danceEDC, welcome to guppylog.

Can you tell us how long you have had the fish tank setup and the fish? Also, do you test your water for ammonia and nitrites?

In my experience it is rare that fins are nipped by other guppies however if you have a mixed tank there may be a culprit.

Causes of tail problems can be bacterial, with or without a fungal infection on top of it, or water quality issues. That is not to say you have dirty water but you may have high levels of ammonia and/or nitrites which occurs when a tank is first started or when new fish are added.

Start by doing water changes. Whatever the cause a 25% water change will improve the conditions the fish is in or remove some of the bad bacteria and give the fish some time and the ability to perhaps resist the problem without the use of medication. If you have been doing 25% weekly water changes then maybe increase it to 30-40% twice a week. Make sure you use water that has been seasoned or treated to remove chlorine etc. if you use water from a town water supply.

The guppylog search function is not always that helpful, in part because we usually end up discussing a different topic from what has been used as the heading. When you are new it is hard to know what to search for as well. Take a look through the Immediate Help section and you might find something useful. You will find a link to it at the top right of every page.

Cheers

I've only had this tank set up for about a month.
Most of the fish in it, however, were salvaged from an old 2 gallon that my sister didn't take much care of, so I adopted the fish.

The guy in question is from that tank.

There are a couple mollies in there besides the guppies and a plecostomos. I do test the ammonia level and it always is around 0, but I've never checked Nitrite/Nitrate levels. I do weekly water changes of about 20% - 25%, if not more than once a week. The pH is also in the proper range and I added aquarium salt, stress coat, etc. when I first set up the aquarium and replace respectively when I do the water changes. The temperature is kept between about 78 and 80. Unfortunately, the fish bit the dust, or gravel, the day after I posted this. Anyways, I'm still worried because it looks like if it was bacterial, it has spread to another male. If not, then I've still got a problem with the mollies, perhaps, but they tend to associate with eachother for the most part.

I've purchased some anti-bacterial stuff and started using that. The water has gotten pretty cloudy, but I am not going to perform a water change for a couple more days for the sake of the medicine.

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you for your help,
hopefully he'll  get better within the week.

Very much appreciated,
Alexander

Hmm, cloudy water is usually caused by a hiccough in the cycle. I wonder if you DO have high nitrites although that is unlikely if you have always tested ammonia at 0. Maybe your ammonia has now gone up with the antibacterial treatment having killed of some offer why your fish got the fin problem in the first place though.

You say the fish were previously owned by your sister - I wonder if part of the problem is the fish have gone from bad quality water to good quality???? I know that sort of doesn't make sense but it is the changes in water conditions that seem to cause problems as well.

Sounds to me like your fish may well have a bacterial infection as you've been doing water changes and testing for ammonia. Stick with the treatment you have bought and make sure you complete the course as per all instructions. Once treatment is finished do a 30-50% water change to remove as much left over treatment as possible and perhaps add some carbon to your filter. Test for ammonia 2nd daily (and nitrites if you can) to watch and see if you get a mini cycle.

Let us know how it all goes.

Cheerio

Thank you very much, I'll let you know. It does look like it has spread to another male and his condition does not seem to have improved so  far. I will keep it up, though. It's only been a few days.

Thanks again,
Alex

If you go to Google and type in (none / 0) (#2)
by unclescott on Fri Mar 03, 2006 at 07:29:16 AM PST

Guppylog tailrot, you will get about 59 hits. Some of them are redundant.

Maybe we should simply post a warning that the search function on this site is a waste of time. "Please go to Google, type in Guppylog and what one is looking for."

Let me add a tiny bit to miskairal's observation about fish waste and clean water. Ammonia is clear, toxic and we wouldn't see it in the water. I would guess nitrites and nitrates are also clear. The bacterial bloom, which may follow, can discolor the water.

Among the hardest things for aquarists (whatever their experience) to do is to save water for a week or two of seasoning and then to do 15-50% partial, weekly water changes. Heck, it is difficult finding household space where that water will not get too cold to use as changing water! That hopefully keeps the toxins, in a cycled aquarium, down and hopefully will keep the fish's immune systems robust and working.

Add too much garbage to the water and the fish will get stressed. If the fish gets stressed (just like with people) the immune systems get compromise. Then the fish (or people) get sick.

I just did a bit of a rant in a comment to the diary "fishies are fine" not because I'm angry with the diarist, who seems like a neat and thoughtful individual, but because I really am frustrated by how little information is given to new aquarists about setting up a tank. Many shops could do and offer more.

The shops could counter with, "How often do potential aquarists pick up one of the many beginner books and read even a chapter on setting up an aquarium." There is some truth to that, but they need to mention to the inquirer that such literature is there.

By the way, googling "setting up an aquarium" draws almost 2 million hits! Even most of the info  from articles on salt water aquariums would apply to freshwater tanks. 10 Easy Aquarium Setup Steps
http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/startinganaquarium/a/aa_aqsetupstep6.htm
is a good example.

It seems that the info is out there. Maybe we just need to point that out and then answer the follow up questions. Sort of like, I read the set-up questions on the Tax Preparation software and loaded it. It then took me parts of 4 days to fight through the questions, reloads, removing of conflicting software, glitches and near crashing of my computer. ;)

I'll shut up now and let you do a partial water change. :)

Good Luck and all the best!

I'm glad I don't have to worry about taxes just yet.

Haha, thank you very much for you information.
