I picked up the black gravel about two weeks ago and went to the pet store today...

I saw this pleco in the pet store that was with a tank with some common plecos they were all blackish colored but one was orange with black spots, and i got him 5 dollars.
The female guppy i had in my ten gallon had babies so i took her out and put hr in the show tank. And i got 6 ghost shrimp (amazingly expensive for what they are) for the baby tank.
With the new java fern and the black gravel my 30 gallon tank looks really cool and all my fish are healthy, and i havent had one fish die since i started keeping guppies like 6 months ago.
I still think my oscars are better though because they are big and have different personalities and when i stick my finger in the tank they swim up and let me pet them like they are enjoying it.

Neat about the oscars. Being larger and (none / 0) (#1)

predators, they do have more intellegance than guppies. Behavioral biologist George Barlow supposedly suggested that they have roughly the untelllegence of wolves. Sometime Google Bartow and cichlids. He had a terrific book come out about 2001. Unfortunately The Cichlid Fishes:
Nature's Grand Experiment in Evolution wasn't widely appreciated until after it had gone out of print. It is available through interlibrary loans and the used book sites. Unfortunately its price is rising rapidly as interest grows and supply declines.

Sounds like a neat tank with the black gravel. Any idea what the "pleco" is and what it eats? :)

If you have mysterious vanishing guppy fry, feed the ghost shrimp more. ;)

I don't exactly know why, stress probably, but ghost shrimp are not supposed to fair as well in glass bottomed aquariums as tanks with some sort of substrate. A little gravel and no reflection seem to accompany longer lives. I guess they feel more secure and for fish, as well as people, that encourages health.

At some shops you can often find ghost shrimp in feeder tanks. But as with other creatures in over crowded, bare-bottomed feeder tanks, ten for a dollar may still not be a good deal.

all the best!

The pleco is a plecostomus and i am going to post some updated pictures of my 2 guppy tanks with the babies ten gal and the 30 gallon when i get around to it/bored and tired of tv.
100 to 150 of ghost shrimp for a few dollars is crazy, i got three of them for a little under 4 dollars.
I also picked up a pigmy cory cat because i have the plateus ones that are brownish black. i think they are kind of ugly so i might give them away to someone who wants them theres 2 of them.

If you have a freshwater bait shop nearby you may want to check and see if they have ghost/bait shrimp. There is one near our lakehouse and a scoop of 100-150 is $2.
*BEFORE you buy fish make sure you understand what "Cycling" a tank means <- quoted from miskaral* ~Trying to make a difference one fish at a time~
