saw a photo and discussion of two species, Endlers and another different sort of orange fish( also a poecilid) with vertical stripes just the other day on the internet somewhere

why-o-why didn't I bookmark it when I had the chance? I thought the photo of that little orange striped fish was great! forward a week or so...to yesterday. I went to the local fish store in search of new plants and happened to see a female which looked just like the photo of the species on the 'net. Shopkeeper told me she came in a mixed bag of discards from a local hobbyist who keeps an aquarium full of livebearers and just brings in a few when the tank gets too full. when I got home, I searched the log and googled poecilia species, and came up with a photo of Poecilia Branneri... the image is kind of poor. The female I have ( I couldn't resist her) is very orange with vertical tiger stripes much like a yellow perch over most of her dorsal area, but her tail is pure orange. Belly is a bit lighter, tending towards gold shading... I wish I had a male. More than that, maybe somebody could tell me where I saw the discussion. It was regarding naming species and included Endler's and another species, and the remark was that the discoverer/namer of the species was surprised when he traveled overseas somewhere and saw some of them with his name on it in a tank somewhere... The female I bought looks just like the photo that was posted with the conversation... I just can't remember the name of the dang species! I wish there had been a male as well... I suppose if she is pregnant I'll find out soon enough...

Whatever it turns out to be, I will enjoy just looking at it. I have loads of reading to do to learn about platys and mollies, etc... I wouldn't know a pure strain from a wild strain from a mutt... just liked this one because it looked like the one in the photo... something about that orange and those black stripes... thanks for all the good info everyone! I'm sure you have already thought of this but there are some strains of platy that match the description you gave.

It seems very formal, with quite a lot of guesswork, and not much community. But some parts can be very detailed. I will keep a close eye on it. They dont have a IH, so get questions like "how do i breed guppies", Plus 99.99% of posts are by the site admin galilee, and most look to be copied straight of the internet.

all in all i dont think you can beat education from first hand experiance, and from people who have great experiance in the subject.

Im not saying the site dosent have this im just saying guppy log is the best. if not its somewhere near the top.

There are lots of livebearers with vertical stripes (including stingrays) but i thought i would mention the small tropical ones ;). The trouble is not identifying them the trouble is finding them.

Also look under Micropoecilia. Interestingly (none / 0) (#9)

while they are found in brackish water, perhaps washing down stream, Harro Hieronimus has also noted that they are found (upstream?) in water with relatively little mineral content. That is rare among the Poecilids. If you get them and they don't reproduce, increase the live foods they get and walk down the mineral content some by adding demineralized water from time to time.
