Fry Growing Out Tanks

Okay, I've gotten the message that everything should be "cycled."

My next question is regarding the number of fry that can conceivably be placed into a growing out tank.

Is there a rule of thumb such as "1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water" when you're dealing with fry rather than adult fish?

I thought I was doing real well with my 2.5 gallon tank but obviously that didn't work that well.

I can afford - maybe - one more tank to use for growing out or breeding or something but no more than one.

And it can't be more than 10 gallon. Is that going to be big enough?

I stumbled across the IFGA (International Fancy Guppy Association) website today and spent some time reading "Beginners Corner."

There I found the answer to my question about the number of fry that should be the maximum in a grow-out tank.

They recommend from no more than one to two fish per gallon until the age of two months when it should go down to one fish per gallon just like with the adults.

There's a lot of good information at this website. Now I realize that what they do is to breed and raise show winners but there's truth in every word and could be adapted to those of us who have no desire to go on the "circuit."

But I've been finding that if I keep my tanks clean (water changes every 3 days or so) I can safely keep 5 adults and 20 or so fry with no real issues. My Endler tank has 13 week old fry, 10 or so adults, and 12 or so juviniles. They are all healthy also. I think if you keep you tanks clean, you can always keep more than the 1 per gallon rule

I'd suggest using the ten for the adults and the 2.5 for the fry.
*BEFORE you buy fish make sure you understand what "Cycling" a tank means <- quoted from miskaral* ~Trying to make a difference one fish at a time~

has an article by their Skeptical Aquarist. Interesting discussion about stunting. They offer a bunch of reasons why crowding isn't the best for fish. Of course, they don't tell how we can have afford (in terms of oney and time) all of the big, healthy, tanks that we would like. ;)

Take a break for a hot chocolate at your nearest big box book store. Read the three fish magazines while you are there. Or skip the drink and purchase one of the mags. :)
