Does anybody have a link to articles about color genetics?

You'd think somebody would have a list somewhere... which colors are dominant over which, which patterns are dominant, etc... I have only been able to find one article(an IFGA link) in numerous searches... maybe this stuff is common knowledge but I am not privvy to it! thanks

Those are great links. You wouldn't get as strong (none / 0) (#2)

a set of discussions here but if you Googled Guppylog on color, colors, color patterns, inheritance, breeding strains and dominant color you would get some discussion.

You are also making an assumption with a multicolored fish (in the wild) that there is a pattern of dominant colors. That is a great question. I wonder though if the answer to your question is "not really".

This is why careful guppy breeders are very picky about which fish they select to breed. They know that otherwise, incomplete dominance will give people who just mix anything diluted and inferior strains.

Also Google Guppylog for Stan Shubal (who just had a second book on Guppies come out on TFH Press by the way), Iwasaki and his book on guppy genetics and Angelee. They either have been mentioned in terms of breeding for colors or in the case of Angelee have held forth on the topic here.

A lot of times we don't get what we want in a search because we just ask one question. Vary how you phrase your queries and you will find more. :)

All the best!

thanks all, also, I didn't think about genetic color info as almost proprietary because of the immediate profitability of some new color/patterns/ strains. Plenty of reading ahead. Methemom

There are a few like that, I don't think (none / 0) (#5)

that most people are that way.

A lady who wrote a lot on guppy color and even how to produce a lot of color "strains" in modest circumstances was Midge Hill. M-G included one of her articles She also wrote for the slicks and club magazines. I think she has an article in the IFGA on-line library.

Nope, I was wrong about that last comment. But when you have a little time extra take a peak at http://www.ifga.org/IFGA%20Library.htm

Google her and see what comes up.

While doing that I also came a cross a Jim Alderson article which may be of interest to you.

These were from the following collection:

It is hard finding material sometimes. And then as one varies the search terms and bounces from site to site, Eurika! ;)
