Although not about guppies, it pertains to a guppy tank that I am restarting using cherry shrimp as a clean up crew + small bioload to start cycling.

I recently purchased a batch of Red Cherry Shrimp to try out as a clean up crew for a restarted tank.  I want to try my hand at a planted tank, and considering how difficult siphoning is with plants, I figured shrimp were the way to go for me.  I like to keep the water a bit brackish, and from what I hear the mini catfish are sensitive to salt due to being scaleless.  Another attractive thing about these shrimp are the small size and the willingness to eat all types of algae.
Unfortunately, even though they seemed lively in the bag, they all look worse for wear at the moment after I dumped them into the tank.  As this tank isn't cycled yet (although does have water treatment + stress zyme to kick start the cycle) I wasn't expecting them to crash and burn quite so quickly.  I was hoping that with such a small bioload that the cycling would be relatively painless.  I wonder if there was some residual cleaner left in the tank, even though I rinsed it thoroughly and liberally.
Luckily I had put a pregnant one aside in a small container with two others that I believe are a male and female, so hopefully those three will survive and propagate until the tank fully cycles.
We'll see if there are any survivors in the tank tomorrow...  Lesson learned : Shrimp are not hardy enough cycle a tank.

Did you just drop them into the water or did (none / 0) (#1)

you leave them in a container and gradually add the new water? I would guess that shrimp are just like fish in (sometimes) needing the gradual acclimation. Then of course, they are added and all of the water they were in was tossed out, again just like what we do with the fish.

You very well may have done this, but it is the first question one should ask. My cherry shrimp did very well at first amd seem to have languished recently. Even with a bumper crop of hair algae, it must be time for a partial water changes.

I actually just dumped them in.  The more I think about it, I wonder if it was a temperature shock.  I  should have gradually added my warm tank water into the baggy, perhaps with a weak airstone.  The three that I managed to save look fine, they are in an unheated small tank of their own now.  What I think I might do (if the three survive) is keep that small tank as a shrimp tank (how most websites suggest) and just transfer large adults into the large tank after the plants take hold.
Such a newbie move.... gah!

cherry shrimp hate amonia and nitrates/nitrates. They are terribly sensitive.......
Nitrates suck
