Is there such a thing as too much oxygen?

I have added air stones to my tanks as the guppies seem to prefere more oxygen in the water. Will this affect my other fish and creatures? Mainly I am asking because I have 2 dwarf frogs, and one of them was extremely puffy when I got up this morning. The only thing that has changed in my tanks are the stones. All of my pH levels, etc are good. He is in my 20G tank. The other frog in the same tank seems fine.
Perhaps it is just coincidence and he has contracted dropsy, or maybe he's been eating the bubbles!
But it made me wonder about how the other fish would react. I also have black stripe tetras, yoyo's and a cory.

I don't think extra oxygen from an airstone would (none / 1) (#1)

hurt the other residents. The tetras and Corys roam out in the current. I don't know that yo-yo (also called Pakistani) loaches do that much, but they look like a current would just roll over them. Guppylog people have impressed me with their stories of guppies playing in filter outflows.

I sure hope your frog doesn't have dropsy or something bacterial. By any chance have you had these critters a while? One article I perused suggested one pair spawned at only six months of age!

What is the bulkier frog was a female? Those tend to be a little longer and a lot huskier than the males.

I think it's dropsy... (none / 0) (#2)
by wraith on Wed Jan 04, 2006 at 08:58:19 AM PST

I started treatment yesterday with maracyn-2. I think the frog has dropsy. It is my male. I've had them for about 7 or 8 months. He is just so bloated everywhere, legs to. Maybe I caught it in time, he seems to be moving a little more today. If not, I will at least save the fish, none of them are showing signs of it.
I have been on line searching for remedies, and maroxy seems to be it, but I can't find it anywhere! Other than that, they say frog surgery...not so sure I'm into that.
So I sit with my fingers crossed that my poor little guy will make it, and that none of my fish will get infected.
I have also turned the airstone off for now. I found one artical that said not to have the tank to aeriated for frogs...But it didn't explain why.
Thanks for the links, lots of info on them as well.

=)

I'm sorry if it is indeed dropsy. Rarely it can be (none / 0) (#3)

stopped if caught early. I think you are wise to look to save your other residents. Since dropsy is the cumulative effects of bacterial populations (at the risk of sounding terminally repetitive), please try to work more water changes in.

That's what I'll be doing in a few minutes. :)

All the best!

well, my frog has died. I have one more day of meds to give to the fish in the tank. I have been really good about water changes, every 5-7 days with seasoned water, hard to do it more as I have 3 tanks and not enough "bucket" space to season water for more than one tank at a time. My levels in the tank were all good, so I kept searching for more info on the aeriation issue.
I found a really informative site on these frogs.
http://clawedfrogs.tripod.com/id33.html
If you scroll to near the bottom of the page you will see something called "gas bubble disease" I think this is what happened.
The first day I set up my new pump, I didn't have a valve on it so it was on full for about 16 hours. It was when i got up the next morning I saw the frog. Perhaps this was the problem? Either way, as soon as the medicine is done, I will do another water change, about 30%, wait a day then do another 30%. Hopefully the problem will not come back.
In the meantime, my guppy's are growing rapidly, and the colors in them are coming out in spades! I am so happy with how some of them look, I may try to find a way to post pics again! I'll have to wait until my cloudy water clears though, flash would probably just bounce off it right now like headlights on fog!

thanks so much for input!
A

Sorry to hear your frog died. Who'd have thought that an extra air stone could do that. To be honest it would never occur to me to look up something like that - you have to know something could cause a problem to know to check it out first (am I making sense?).

Anyway, that looks like a great site you have found. I'll add this whole post to the Immediate Help under Other fish and Tank companions.

I would have never known either. (none / 0) (#6)

I came upon that while looking for how to treat frogs, if it was different that how to treat fish. And as it happens, for fish they suggest using the maracyn two or plus products, and for frogs they suggest using maroxy. So I used both, maracyn two and moroxy, apparently they can be used at the same time. It still didn't save him.
So I will wait for the tank to settle, and then go get my little girl a new friend!
My fish are still not showing any signs of having it, so I am pretty happy about that.
I will do as the site suggests as well, and have my air stone on lower, and not all the time. See if that helps.
This fish tank hobby is becoming serious business! haha! =)
