I think the new plants I got are killing my guppies.

I started out with 2 males and 1 female. The female is not in the same tank because she's due for fry. The males weren't eating good or swimming much. They would stay stationary in the corner with their tails down and face up, practically vertical. When a guppy and a snail died, I decided to clean the tank. I thought maybe the reason was from the new fake plants I put in. I didn't wash them when I took them out of the package, so maybe they had crap on it that was poisoning my tank. Since I cleaned it, the other guppy has been eating and swimming more. But sometimes I still find him stationary and vertical. Were the plants my culprit? Is my other guppy going to die?

Steffie, how old is your tank? Have you had fish in it for more than 6-9 weeks?
*BEFORE you buy fish make sure you understand what "Cycling" a tank means <- quoted from miskaral* ~Trying to make a difference one fish at a time~

flower shop or from a fish shop? Bagged stuff in a fish shop "shouldn't" be dangerous either in terms of their chemistry or a residue on them. I do think that you are really wise to wipe off and rinse anything new to an aquarium though.

There are a lot of non-fishy things which can be used in aquaria. I often wonder about plastic and other artificial flowers and plants. The "silk" flowers I would avoid if they really are silk or have a scent. Also, avoid anything distinctly organic. Some other plastics leach toxic "plasticizers" and we need to always ask if they are "food quality" plastic. The plastic plants from aquarium suppliers should always be food quality, but you are well advised in looking to see if something is on them. (Bleach garage sale aquarium plants.)

Some otherwise safe plastic plants may be in a garden center where they have assumed the scent and a residue of the Ortho plant fertilizers and herbicides. Those babies need to be avoided or if purchased, really soaked and rinsed. I might even bleach them.

Of course, it is possible that your guppies were ill for other reasons. Has the tank cycled (is it over 9 weeks old?) What temperature is that aquarium? Were they behind in partial water changes? When you "clean" the filter, if any, do you still leave it a little discolored (discoloured) so that some of the "good" bacteria are still there? Could the fish be suffering from something which rode in with them from the shop? Are there little worms extending from their vents?

Your evidence, by way of the partial water change, suggests that there might have been something on the plastic. And that is sagacious, suggesting that we be selective when purchasing plastic plants and in cleaning them off well.

Keep up the partial water changes with seasoned water. If there is any reason to doubt the plastic plants, get them out. With a little TLC, your male has a pretty good chance of making it.

If he seems ill still, let's look to what might be ailing him. If there are no spots, dots, hitch-hikers, frayed fins or discoloration on him and you have been consistent with the partial water changes, consider the possibility of internal parasites. (Gee whiz, that's what he always says...)

All the best!

Well, I would definatly never put something in the tank that was from a floral shop.. lol

Anyway, It was from Petco and I'm pretty sure that the plants were the reason because he's hanging on like a champ now and I haven't seen him struggling to swim since I got home. I don't notice any spots or discolouration. Seems pretty healthy to me.

I am pretty angry that it didn't say anything on the package about cleaning it before putting it in the tank, unless I missed it. Because now my male is all alone & I'm not sure I want to put the female back with him because I have enough fry to deal with, AND more on deck.
WHICH BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER QUESTION.
My fry are a little over 2 months old and I was wondering when I could put them back with bigger fish and not worry about the bigger guys eating them. The last thing I need is more guppies dieing.

I have to ask what you mean by "seasoned water". I'm pretty new to guppy farming or whatever it is I do now. To be honest though, I don't think I have anything to worry about with the water/temperature situation because I've been doing it exactly the same for a long time & the only time they had problems was when I put this fake plants in. But I know that if he starts to slip again, petco isn't to blaim and that It might be something else.

I took a picture of him but I can't seem to get the HTML right..

Thank you very much for your response, I didn't think I'd get this good of help.

Hi steffie,

Unless you have really nasty guppies, two month old fry should be ok in with adults, however, remember that you will end up with even more fry if you mix the sexes.

There is a lot here at GL on seasoned water, try the Immediate Help for starters and if that fails type guppylog and seasoned water into google.

To put a clickable link in all you have to do is copy and paste the address and then choose autoformat from the dropdown box that usually defaults to having plain text in it to start with.

Cheers

Thanks a bunch miskairal.

I'm going to need a magnifying glass to determine the sex of these fry, haha.. Oh well I'll figure it out. But they are still so small, I'll be amazed if they try to reproduce.

Bahh. He's swimming funny again.
& I'm going to be away for 4 days..

Maybe he just sleeps like that?
Maybe I'm in denial.
Sorry about the angle by the way
I was trying not to scare him

Can you put some new activated carbon in the (none / 0) (#5)
by unclescott on Thu Jan 19, 2006 at 07:34:34 AM PST

filter? One wonders if there is something (perhaps even a household chemical) floating in on the air?  Rinse the new activated carbon and put it into one of those filter cartridges. Or put it in a nylon filter bag or old, soap-less stocking segment or that one knee-high (sp?) without a partner.

Activated carbon only lasts a week or two as a chemical filter. It should "watch the shop" while you are gone.

A more expensive filter resin is Polyfilter. Your LFS (Live Fish Shop) may have other such items.

That is a beautiful multicolor male. I'd certainly work/fight to keep him too.

Do you have any rocks or other decorations which could be leaching into the water?

Wish this was of more definitive help.

I toodled something out on household poisons which may be in the Immediate Help section. I feel like such a duffer, I can't find it. :(

Have a nice trip and I hope the male is ok when you return.
