Guppies

My guppy needs advice.
Here is a pic of the situation

http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=dpa0wj

Is this a male or female?

She, I'm guessing, is sitting on the bottom of tank often and has white stuff coming out the back. It's all white, no red.

Any suggestions? Is this a problem?

I'll be reading the FAQ's soon.

Thanks for the fish pix compliments.
I used the flash to freeze him. The pic was very dark and I lightened it in photoshop. It was almost impossible to shoot as there was no way to adjust focus quickly with my little digicam.

Yes, I am a pro photographer by trade. Feel free to swipe the guppy pic for whatever.

As for the fish.

He died about a half hour after this was posted.

His tank mates ate half his tail before I found him a short time after that.

So you are all saying that really is his male thing and nothing else. i have a lot to learn about my new pets.

I got the guppy at Petco so I wouldn't be surprised of him having poor health. They had many floaters in their tanks.

BTW, that's funny being accused of trolling the fish forum. Lighten up Francis.

So this was a new fish. Please don't take this the wrong way (I hate when a sentence begins with that phrase) but seeing as how you didn't know it's gender would it also be safe to assume that you didn't know about cycling either? Please read the Immediate Help section again on cycling, it may have been as simple a problem as "New tank syndrome". Sorry about your loss, the first fish in a tank are the ones you should try not to get too attatched to, as most of us here have unfortunately learned the hard way. Oh yeah, please fell free to do a write up on picture taking tips, tricks, and techniques for fish. ;-)

Shame we didn't come up with a diagnosis. I haven't heard mention of anything like that here at GL before. That guppy certainly doesn't look like he's about to die to me, maybe not well because of the ?gill inflammation or the sudden fall away from right behind the gills, but not almost dead.

[Editor's Note - I have made the image APPEAR at 75% of it's size. To view at 100% click the link above the pic. I did this to prevent the Front Page having a horizontal scrollbar on common screen sizes/resolutions]

Look at the contour of the belly..  If you look carefully, there is a hint of the pine-cone effect..

I wonder if your beautiful (and young) male fish might have an internal infection?  That would be consistent with it hanging around at the bottom of the tank.

Or, perhaps another possibility.. Are there any females for him to chase?

In any case, take more photos like this, they don't normally sit still for this long for your photo taking convenience!

Hmm your right Peter - there is a bit of scale protrusion there. Good one!

Yeah Peter, but he's asking about a (none / 0) (#7)
by unclescott on Fri Sep 16, 2005 at 08:48:10 PM PST

functional gonopodium. If one looks in a guppy book, they will see the hook arrangement at the end of it, which allows the male to properly insert the gonopodium into the female and hold her long enough to inseminate her.

cugir is taking the pose that he doesn't know what that is all about. Really this is trolling, only most of you have been so nice about this that he/she is probably terribly disappointed. ;)

All the best,
unc

that what you think is a problem is actually a fish penis.

Congratulations cugir on a nice clear picture.

I would guess this is a male with something wrong with his gonopodium. The fish has no gravid spot, has colours more like that of a male and has an anal fin that more closely resembles a male's gonopodium than the female's fan shaped fin.

I'm wondering if he has an infected gonopodium, bacterial or fungal?? Does this white stuff actually get expelled? If so, what is he left with, is there a fin there of some sort?

How long has this fish been like this? Has he been laying on the bottom since the stuff started coming out ie. has he been sick all this time or has he only just gotten sick as well?

Is he in with females and if so, has he been mating? I'd suggest increasing water changes until someone reads this who has more ideas on what the problem is.

Cheers
miskairal

Looks like a male to me, possibly young with gonopodium still developing?

You are kidding of course! :) (none / 0) (#4)

Anyone who would go to the trouble of taking such a great and professional looking photo, would also bother to ask the shop where that fish might have been purchased, what it was that was that he or she just paid for.

If you are an aquarist, the possibility that you would have such a mature guppy and not yet know the gender, is even more improbable.

Quizzically yours,
Herb Axelrod

Just because he takes great photos doesn't mean he knows about fish. As we know I couldnt' take a good photo if it was handed to me but I do love to draw and there has been many times I've drawn flowers/plants (and even bought them to draw)and had no idea what they were. A good eye doesn't necissarily translate to a knowledgable one.

I'm a little surprised so many of us voted for it. Hope we voted for the pretty face rather than a very lame question.
