I honestly think my two remaining adults are okay now. I see them flash once in a blue moon... nowhere near as often as they did. The female has not gotten any bigger, and her spine still seems a little odd, aand her gravid spot is still pinkish-red, but her fins are at full-mast and she's eating well and happy and excited about her life. The male is as content as always.
So I don't know what's up with the girl, but I'll leave it alone. I think the tank is cycled back to normal. I'll give it a water change later today.
I actually think I'll keep the fry in the little tank until they get a little bigger. They seem really happy in there, which surprised me, if not a bit pale in color. That might just be the difference in gravel color.
SO.. I have a 5.5 gallon that's been running merrily along for the past week or so, fishless. I'm going to keep a male betta in there, and a few african dwarf frogs. As I read, they can get along fine as long as there's plenty of cover for everyone. In any case, if there are any problems, I can always move the adfs. Aah, the glories of having more than one tank.
I'm toying with the idea of trying a female guppy in with the betta, later on... perhaps not on a permanent basis, but... just to see what happens. Maybe once one of these fry gets bigger than a betta's mouth, I'll pop her in there. Since I believe Scott mentioned that male bettas can be raised from fry together, and live together in a big, well-planted tank... I wonder if a male betta could become accustomed to a colorful fish that grew out of a plain little fry. I think the tank's too small to try something like that on a permanent basis, but I'm really interested to push the limits on bettas as community fish.
I'm fish-sitting for my friend's two bettas. They're in a horrible little plastic box-o-death, and that's driving me nuts. I'm going to have to fight to get her to put them in at least a gallon a piece. At this point, I feel like buying the tanks for them. Oi.
In any case, I'm trying to be respectful about it... so right now, they're up against the 10-gallon, and seem to like watching the guppies.
