Well while doing a water change a few days ago I noticed that I have some new tank mates... worms.... :( :( :(

But that doesnt really bother me too much.. As

A) Havent added new fish for a few months now...
B) No deaths..
C) Not sure if its a fish problem....

It might just be a natural thing in the water up here and not nessessarly from the fish or a parasite... Its skinner then a hair and barely moves.. But to be sure I am getting the medications I need today.. so I can start treating all my tanks.. As if one has it after this long then they must all have it...

Im going to be doing extra water changes though till cured...

My female who I was waiting to drop still hasent dropped any new fry, though last night her gravid spot had moved once again, she is huge atm.. my only fear is that she may abort... as it has been quite a while.. Her original 5 fry born are all still doing fine with no problems... The 20+ Fry that were all showing black are now starting to show a secondary colouring,,, Blue,, Its coming out slowly so Its nice watching them grow..

They havent developed any of the males trates yet. though I dont think it will be long now... I would judge by gravid spots but there is a few that dont have them, that I am almost sure are females.. ;/

My other babies are all grown into adults.. My fav male born at home's tail is a nice orange and black and has grown to an inch long,,, hope to get some pictures soon... Other then that its been nice reading all the other posts on here.. with everyone else getting fry and asking some questions that I love...

DJ, I reckon they will be males. Especially if they are the snakeskins as they seem to be "late bloomers" with a lovely female looking anal fin but no gravid spot. When they are about 4 months old that anal fin can change into a gonopodium in as little as 48 hours and they develop the full snakeskin look.

Don't put them in with a tank of females too soon or if you do, check them EVERY day for gonopodium development.

Cheers

I love how the babies are already gaining there second color... The Light neonesk blue looks good on the black, But then I descovered yet another color, the fish who havent been developing the black as well or the blue at all now have a yellow tinge to them... so I might get lucky and have them come out as the snakeskin somewhat... I am almost ready to sperate the males now.. as There fin is starting to get pointy showing a male..... and i dont want them to impregnate my females..

Wow thanks Unc... :) I now know what the worm is..
Dero :) And yes i did have a plant in there.... which had later died because of wrong lighting in that tank.... ;/ Good to know what it was... I have to say I was quite worried. But I had seen the fish eating them if one floated by them... So it turns out I do have worms, but there a good kind :) Yay!!!!! Thank you very much unc.... :)

DJ, did you add some newly purchased plants (none / 1) (#1)

or some plants gathered outside in that aquarium? You may have had some hitchhikers.

Dero worms or Naiad worms are among the detritus eating worms that clean up decaying plant parts. They are commonly found in duckweed and algae mats. Masters in his Encyclopedia of Live Foods mentioned Dero and Nias and a couple of related worms as great fish food. I find them once in a while in my Daphnia cultures.

Tangentally, you didn't feed blackworms and have them get loose in the gravel? Sometimes they will abide and even reproduce there. However the gravel can sour, the blackworms perish and the tank really can bomb - so I work to get them out of the gravel if there are very many. (Don't treat for parasites with blackworms in the gravel.)

You may want to Google for images of the genus Dero, Aeolosoma, Naias. Just to be on the safe side, maybe also Google for aquatic tape worms - in case that came out of one of your fish.

Let us know if there is a big difference and what the worms in your aquarium most likely are. If you have treated those fish for parasites before and recently added plants, I would guess they might be those detrivores which make good fish food. Otherwise, I too would be concerned.

All the best!
unc
