Breeding

People told me that guppies were supposed to be easy to breed. All that I have gotten from my guppies is confusion.

When I first bought my guys I had 2 females. I decided to let them use up all of their saved sperm packets before buying a male for them. For a fair while I kept noticing gravid spots but I didnt really see them get bigger or fatter than normal.

After this happened a few times one of my guppies started to get really fat. But it seems she got too fat then died before giving birth. Now I have a new bunch of smaller females and although I've been watching them keenly, I found some babies swimming about and I didn't even think that any of my females were pregnant.

Maybe just because my first guppy got so fat maybe I expect all guppies to be like that.

What do you think? How much fatter than normal do they normally get before giving birth. I'd love to start keeping the babies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Belly Size (none / 0) (#4)
by nancylb999 on Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 05:49:34 AM PST

My experience has shown that belly size isn't a good reference to how many fry will turn up. I had one very plump female who dropped only 5 fry. Then, to my surprise, another female, who I thought was not as pregenant because she was much slimmer, somehow managed to pork out 14 fry a couple days later. She went from being a little round to very thin overnight.

I think it has more to do with the strain and the individual as to how big they will get before they are ready to drop. If you keep observing, and perhaps start taking notes, you might being to see a pattern for each female.

Good Luck.

-Nancy.

I'd wager a guess that maybe your really fat female had dropsy or was perhaps constipated. Did you feed them anything else but flake food? Sometimes really rich food too often can be a bad thing for their tummies.

If not, see if your fish perhaps resembled this one..

http://photos.wemm.org/supersized This one is a little extreme, but it gives you a general idea.

I know it's hard to remember back, but do you remember her scales sticking out at all?

In any case, guppies don't always get huge when they're pregnant. A normal pregnant guppy might look like any of these..

(Note: I've never seen any of my girls get that big, and I also do not condone by ANY means putting a female in a breeding box like that.)

I'll give you the advice I give everyone, and the advice many seem to agree with.. since it is rather tricky to catch exactly when a guppy is pregnant, it's best to let the babies enter the world in a main tank. If you want to keep a seperate fry tank, try doing what I do and ladle-ing them out when you see them. When they're only a few days old, they're quite dumb and easy to catch in a ladle.. and also, it's much easier on the tiny babies than a rough net. However, the nets don't seem to hurt them. They're very... resilient when young.

As long as you give the babies lots of places to hide, and feed the adults regularly and well, supplementing them with live, frozen and defrosted, or freeze-dried food, they shouldn't go after the babies. Mine never seem to.

Besides, it's often best to expose them to danger a little.. because you certainly won't want to keep them all! You'll shortly run out of room in your house. :) Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks for that. My first female looked exactly like that first photo. She was huge, and when she died i found some fry. SO i assume she got too big and died during childbirth. What do u think?

The first photo, "supersized?"

If she looked like those, then she was probably both pregnant and ill.  That huge bloated fish in those pictures has dropsy... which, as far as I've seen, is almost impossible to treat.

But if you're saying she looked like one of the last three... then there's no telling.

My guppies breed TOO fast...  the problem is the babies always get eaten before I get them.  Well, now I don't even try... too many fish...

I've had a few females get dropsy and die during birth.  Maybe they're more vulnerable, or maybe it made them give birth early.

I've noticed size varies from fish to fish.  Some of my fish get huge, some I can't even tell.  Always the same for a fish from time to time.

Behaviour is the best way I can tell.  I can narrow it down from 1-2 days usually.  The female gets reclusive, doesn't eat or eats and spits it up, and slows way down with the swimming.
They usually get a little V shape back by the anal fin, too.

Getting the babies before they get eaten is still hard  ;)

I've never found that particularly hard.  The first few hours are a little dodgy, but after that.. as long as you have cover at the top and bottom of the tank, and feed the adults well... I seem to come out of it with a lot of the fry still alive.  It seems my adults rarely eat the babies.
