Mickey's Intro

Mickey is currently being raised as a lone fry in his very own tank. I rescued him from a pet store tank where he was being chased by the adult fish. All of his brothers and sisters had already been eaten. I used to breed guppies and have experience raising them so I brought him home. Although 'he' is beginning to show signs of being a female :)I am hoping to get some more fry to grow up with Mickey soon. Having a guppy in the house again is bringing back so many memories, I had to get rid of all of my fish because of school but now that I have a little bit more time I am going to get back into it.

Mickey eats a powdered flake mix of 2 parts general health flakes, and 1 part color enhancer which he gets 3 times a day. He also gets liquid protein food once a day, and I am trying to hatch brine shrimp which should be ready in a few hours.
Oh I just saw one float to the top!

Welcome to guppylog Princess and welcome to Mickey (or should that be Minnie?).

I hope you manage to save some more fry from another petshop to keep Mickey company. You sound like you are getting great pleasure out of watching Mickey so far.

Cheers

Mickey can be a girls name too (none / 0) (#2)

I had the nickname Mickey for a while when I was young before it became Shell, both short for Michelle.
Anyway, welcome to GL. Sounds like you are off to a good start. Also sounds like Mickey is going to be one spoiled little fishy lol. Have you read up in the Immediate Help section on new tanks and cycling? If you don't already have a cycled tank may I make the suggestion to put Mickey somewhere else temporarily and do a fishless cycle on his tank. It's a LOT faster (sometimes takes as little as a few days to a week) than cycling a tank with him/her in it and a lot less harmful/lethal. I would hate for you to go so far out of your way to make Mickey happy only to have him/her succumb to New Tank Syndrome. Good luck and once again welcome to GL.

I'm not so sure on the cycling requirements of a single fry in a tank on it's own. Last year I set up a tank for fry and saw no cycle. I suspect that the input (food) and output (poop) of a single fry is not enough to raise the ammonia dramatically. Fish mass to water volume would make a difference. The whole cycle process grows as the fry grow.

Well that's just what I think happens.

I'm probably overly cautious lol. Heck, I even cycled a little bowl to put the ghost shrimp in.
