Well the numbers sure have dwindled since 50+ now I approximate around 20 - 25 tops all but 1 have began to show color

Though coloring may not have to do with size, all seem to be coming out as full blacks, around 7 of them are almost fully colored with others showing black on both the top and bottom of there tail..

Though I have yet been able to sex a single one... so either they are just starting into there sexual stage of there development or I have all females... But judging upon the coloring id say just over half are males...

Its kind of weird saying coloring as they are full blacks... should be saying fully shaded lol

As for my next breeder batch I was sad to have my female die not a day before delivery... sad that I had not had found her earlier, judging upon the coroners report (me and my knife) the babies may have survived had I gotten her closer to death rather then some hours later... and then a day later another female died.. (Did a 75% water change in fear of bad chem. levels...) now I have my orange male with 3 females (1 is a week too 2 away from drop. others just being fertilized... (or are virgins for life)

Hey DJ! Sorry about that one female. (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Mon Jul 25, 2005 at 11:50:01 AM PST

The middle of summer can be a rough time on even tropical fish. You, and think it was PeterW, amaze  me with your C-sections on ailing female guppies. I think the effort is a terrific idea. Yet another reason to always have a clean and unused Exactoknife blade on hand. (Now, if only I remembered where I safely stored mine.)

As for the batch of "all black males", try putting individuals in a jar and using a flashlight to "candle" them. I wonder if the gravid spot would show a little differently from the tail coloring on females.

Getting a whole batch of one gender has got to be quite unusual (unless maybe temperatures or hardness or pH were really at an extreme high or low). If they are all male you are either very lucky or extremely unlucky. Enter a lottery, but stay out of thunderstorms. ;)

Thank you, by the way, for the photos and video referred to in your last diary.

All the best!
unc
