I have an established community tank with three female guppies and various other types.  I just added a male/female pair.  I noticed that the new female would, for lack of a better word, "dance" around in circles with the existing females.

Were they fighting or just getting to know each other?

Thanks

Re: The "New Fish" dance (none / 0) (#1)

Getting to know each other I'd say.

I once put an older male in with 15 older females and he spent two days "sniffing" them but to no avail as the girls were past being fertile. Shame really because he was a stunning male but sadly he died yesterday after spending weeks lazing around on plant leaves. He still raced out at feed time though. He was about 18 months old and had a hard life (overcrowding for most of it) so I figured he was on the way out from old age.

Now that you mention it, what they were doing looked a likkle like "sniffing" (both head to the other's fin, swimming in a circle).  I guess I should keep a lookout for fry soon `<;-)

Thanks,

When they drop fry, female guppies are supposed (none / 0) (#3)

to release pheromones which inform males that the females can be impregnated for the two days after dropping. (Like male guppies needed anymore motivation!) I wonder if, just prior to dropping, if some females leak a bit of that chemical cue.

Ed, you and miskairal, are both quite perceptive in noticing that. No wonder the males are boogying all over the place. :)

All the best!
