I have had complete failure when it comes to breeding guppies. I have had many guppies where the females appear to be pregnant, but before I see any little guppies, the adults die. But now I have a new situation. I only have two guppies right now, amongst several other species of fish. They've been around for awhile. The female, as usual, appeared pregnant. However, she began to grow larger and larger. Now she is HUGE...

Her stomach is gigantic, and she has grown longer than the male, too. It appears her back has a slight angle to it, where the stomach causes it to bend. I don't know what to do. Because she's been like this for approx. two months, I suppose she isn't pregnant. I'll try to take pictures if anyone needs them.

I agree with the questions posted by the panel.  Also, if nay is the answer to many of them, I might suspect internal parasites of some kind.  I'll withhold opinion other than that until some questions are answered.

A photo would indeed be very helpful. (none / 1) (#1)

A picture is worth 1,000 words. (2,000 of mine). Are you sure your guppies haven't been dropping where others in the community would be gobbling up the fry?

There is, as you have speculated, the possibility of some sort of disease with your guppies. Take a look at dropsy and pregnancy entries in our Quicklinks section.

I still hope it is just the other fish eating the fry. :)

All the best!

I agree with US, a fast check of some of the photos of ailing guppies that are in Quicklinks would be wise.

I have another couple of questions for you.  Is your female plump at the back end, near her vent?

Is her gravid spot large and dark as well?

Finally, does her tail bend under, like she's a little hunchbacked right now?

A few answers here might help.

Also, what other fish do you have in your tank?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Oh! And while everyone is trying to figure out (none / 1) (#3)

what is happening, can you give the tank a 25% water change with seasoned water Thursday? How about more of thos echanges, every day that is possible. :)

Whatever else is done, that couldn't hurt.

Also, look to see if the female guppy is excreeting anything unusual from her vent.

ATB!
