Hi I am new to this site and so far I love it.I have recently bought 6 guppies (4 female)(2 male). One of my male's tail has been nipped of or something.

Anyway my problem is one of my male guppy's tail has been nipped off or something and I was wondering what is the disease(if it is a disease)what is it called and how can I treat it.I don't want anything to happen to my beautiful guppies and I have put him in another tank so if he is infected he won't infect any of the other fish.I am changing the water now and I have money so I can buy a cure if there is one. Please reply a.s.a.p. me and my fish thank you :D!

Hey GuppyLover92,

This just recently happened to me as well.

I posted a photo of my male in my imagestation album.
The address is http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=4288225435&idx=11

If you're not a member you need to sign up, but it's free, and only takes a second.

I know mine was nipped off by the new female I put in with him to breed with.
No other explaination, no fuzzy stuff on end of tail.
Just one VERY hungry new tankmate.

Good luck with yours.

gg
:o)

Are there any other fish in the tank other than guppies, that might solve a problem...

Ok I see, well the African Frog aren't a threat to guppies, so it prabably is a disease...

Editorial is when you want to make a comment on the way something is written, the grammar, spelling etc.

Topical is when you want to make a comment about the actual topic, the fish problem.

Anything posted as Editorial will not show up to anonymous guppyloggers ie. those who haven't signed up for an account, so if you want your comment  made visible (and helpful) to everyone, make it topical. This only applies when the story is still in the "moderate" queue.

Oh and editorial comments appear with a red box around them while topical comments appear with a blue box.

Guppylog takes a while to learn :)

You're going to need to give more specifics.  Do you know how old the fish is? What does the tail look like? Is there a cottony substance at the end? Do you test your water?  The new fish could have been sick before you bought them.  Do you have aquarium salt?  If so, make sure to do water changes on a regular basis and add some salt.  It could be finrot or tailrot.

If you click on Quicklinks, there is a section called Finrot/Split fins/Tailrot/red fins.

Aquarium salt helps fish replenish their slime coat.  Aquarium salt is not that expensive.  It hink here in NJ it's less than $3 for the smallest box.  If you have access to medications, try an antibiotic that states it treats finrot/tailrot.  There are all sorts of medications on the market here in the US for just that.  Maracyn II is pretty good for that.

How big is your tank? Do you have a gravel syphon?  Try to do more water changes.

Until you get this straightened out, I would not add any more fish to the mix.

Good luck!

Keep up the partial water changes. If you have (none / 1) (#11)
by unclescott on Mon Feb 21, 2005 at 11:54:13 AM PST

the time and seasoned water which has sat for a couple of days and been treated with a water conditioner if you have municipal water with chlorine and ammonia added, even daily 30-40% water changes of about the same temperature, are beneficial. That is removing the problem which compromised the guppy's immune system and allowed the bacteria to do harm in the first place.

Tailrot is nature's way of telling you the water is too polluted. Sometimes, I really hate "nature's way."

By the way, you are to be applauded for moving your male guppy to quarantine! That is not always easy, but it is wise. Hopefully he is located where he is still consistently about as warm as he was. :)

That may be fungus on the tail. Fungus is nature's way of cleaning up dead tissue. That needs to be lifted off, so the live tissue can grow and heal.

You can try a salt water bath where you put the fish into saltwater for 10 minutes. Remove it back to it's tank sooner if it shows distress or the gills are really, really working. Hopefully the fungus should life off and you can treat the fish with militant water change and possibly add an antibiotic, as per manufacturer's instructions

10G of salt for a Litre of water is one recommendation. Ok, since ...

1 level tablespoon Salt = Approx. 25 g or 1 oz
1 liter = 0.26417205 gallon

Then if you were to take a gallon of seasoned aquarium water, you could add 1-2 tablespoons of water to a gallon of water for a 1 to 2% solution. (Maybe pre-dissolve the salt in a smaller, soap-less, container, "shake and bake" and add it to rest of that gallon.) If you are using rock crystals, the solution may be a little more dilute. If you are using small grained feed or aquarium salt, the salinity may be a tad higher.

I have seen people who just netted and dipped the fish into that salt solution. If you are right there, monitoring for stress and will move that fish out before 30 minutes, that can work.

A kinder, gentler, salt bath is to put you fish in a container with just a quart or so of tank water. (Don't feed them for a day before this - so they don't regurgitate food and foul the water - or watch carefully with siphon tube at the ready.) Add a little bit of that salt water, maybe 25% of what is in there with the fish, every 30-60 minutes, until the fish is used to that full salinity.

Then after 30-60 minutes, drop the water level way down and gradually add tank water until the fish is used to the tank water again, which makes up 90+ % of what he is in.

This was your day off. Right? ;)

All the best!
u.s.
